I'm going through that ecstasy of finding a new special interest. It's been building over time but before it was just curiosity and now it feels like something more full time.

I've got so much to learn but I've been buying as many fact files as I can. I admit I'll never know as much as people who have grown up reading the comics but my housemate has a nice collection of comic books and I've noticed he might have missed buying an issue but will have the one after that, and I have this need to buy the missing issue before I read the next one.

I'm reading Thor, The Avengers and managed to get my hands on some Captain America from '68. Ebay is the worst place for me to be right now. People are selling 30+ classic comics at once.

I want to read more Iron Man, Dr Strange, Daredevil, X-Men - you name it.

I've also got into the new Batman series although it's mainly aimed at kids. The Brave and the Bold it's called and it's just funny how they've gone back to their 60's roots. Maybe I can get my four year old nephew into it. He's started to like Batman.
I just really miss the Warner Bros cartoon I used to watch as a kid. Batman has always been a favourite of mine because of my early childhood movie addiction that's seemed to have grown the older I got.

Does anyone else like Marvel comics or DC or Dark Horse? I pretty much started out reading The Simpsons, Star Wars and Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover comics.

I've missed having a special interest that's lasted longer than a day.

I've always liked superheroes like the X-Men and Superman and all that and in the last year or so I've been getting involved in the comics too. My only problem is I'm trying to get all the stories in order.

I grew up loving Superman. The old campy Batman TV show got my attention, so due to that and his close association with Superman, Batman's a secondary interest.

The recent reboot they did to pretty much the whole DC Comics universe (Sept. of 2011)...

It's still the characters I know, but they did things that are, to long time fans, unacceptable. They took the red trunks off Superman's costume and put a red belt in place of the yellow one. (As far as the characters are concerned, there never were any red trunks.) They also took the gold off Wonder Woman's tiara and costume emblem, and changed both to gray/silver.

Yuck!

They also made the Lois/Clark marriage into a "it never happened" situation. (This even got the attention of a time-traveling bad guy from the future who knew Clark and Lois were supposed to end up together. Even he knows something's wrong, and he's just a character CREATED by DC!)

I could go on and on, but many fans are NOT happy with the current situation, reflected in the dropping sales numbers where "Superman" and "Action" comics are concerned.

Don't get me started on the fact Wonder Woman and her alter ego Diana Prince are now the women in Superman's and Clark's life, or that they've created a whole new "Superman and Wonder Woman" comic book based on the relationship. I also don't like the weird yellow lines they've added to Barry Allen's FLASH costume... No. Enough.

Yes.

DC Comics are a special interest of mine, I guess.

Star Trek too, but even that's being slowly destroyed since CBS Inc. got its hands on the franchise.

I guess there's always Doctor Who...

Oh don't get me started on the changes they've made to Doctor Who.

I think I enjoy the new Star Trek movies because I was too young for the original series. I only know bits and pieces from it. I watch any Star Trek episodes I get a chance to. Right now they are airing re-runs of Deep Space 9.

I've noticed DC do like to make some really random changes. As a Doctor Who fan I like how a series can stay canon. Stephen Moffat has been pushing it with the latest couple of seasons of Doctor Who though.

DC have also have done some questionable things like having a competition in which fans design a woman committing suicide to show it as a human weakness. Anyway, there was a massive boycott of DC over that.

That's why I like to stick to Marvel. They seem to be staying true to their characters and even the movies are better. I've not seen them all but enjoyed Thor, The Avengers, Spiderman and Captain America. Green Lantern just didn't hold up and I couldn't get into the latest Batman movies. I've really got to see all 3 Iron Man movies too.

I'm starting to warm to Superman. He just didn't seem to have any weakness to me and that made it harder for me to get the stories. I've always loved Batman because he still had the average human weaknesses. After about watching three Superman movies I'm getting used to him though. I hope my Netflix gets Man of Steel soon.

Oh boy, comics and trading cards. I can't do them. I love them so much that I would spend all of my money on them and end up on the streets. Thanks for helping me relive some good childhood memories there.

Enjoy your new interest.

I was obsessed with comic books many years ago. I used to read and re-read them, for days on end. My favorites were batman and superman (I particularly liked the stories about Kandor). I also liked reading Spiderman, Green Lantern and even Richie Rich and Archie comics.

Comics are awesome, mainly Marvel though I'll start working my way into DC soon enough, since it gets more flak than Marvel.

I really used to like comics when I was younger. I had my hands on Blue Beetle and other original comics that would be worth a fortune today.

Harvey Comics were some of my favourites, too. I liked Sad Sack, Audrey, Wendy the Good Little Witch, Casper the Friendly Ghost and my favourite, Hot Stuff.

I've always been interested in comic book superheroes but it didn't really develop into a special interest until 2009 when I got into it in a big way. I started buying tons of graphic novels, vintage comics and new comics. I had some pretty nice stuff such as the 1st appearances of Iron Man, the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern and the Punisher. Unfortunately, I didn't really have the financial means to support this interest and I got so carried away that I ended up selling much of the vintage collection that I had built up. I took a back seat from the vintage side of comic collecting and focused more on new stuff.

I've stopped reading DC and Marvel comics for the most part as I've not found their current offerings all that interesting. I mainly buy comics from Image as they have several titles that I enjoy and hold my interest. The Walking Dead, Chew, Elephantmen and Fatale are all regular buys. I also attend conventions and have met legends such as Stan Lee and Neal Adams. I've also dipped my toe back into vintage comics but I'm much more restrained than I was before. I have the first Avengers comic and Wolverine's 1st appearance (the latter signed by the artist who first drew him) among my current collection. I'm saving up to get another big 'key' issue but I'm not sure which one to get yet.

Question: if I wanted to start collecting and reading Green Lantern or Batman comics, and in order storywise, where would I start?

Depends how far back you want to go. You could always start by checking out classic graphic novels such as The Dark Knight Returns, Year One or The Killing Joke (all Batman titles). Another good place to start is the collections of Batman/Green Lantern comics by Denny O' Neill and Neal Adams from the early 1970s which are highly regarded by comic fans. Some more recent Batman ones that are worth a look are The Long Halloween, Going Sane and Hush.
