"Teen Who Jumped from an Ambulance Was Autistic."

Strangely written article.

Eesh, that must have been a VERY big overload . . . but if the grandmother sprayed him, it kinda makes me wonder what she did that would result in such a severe meltdown.

It does seem any patient hospitalized for a violent outburst involving pepper spray, with a history of similar incidents would have been medicated in house, and especially for transport. I've seen repeatedly how doctors deal with patients who behave aggressively - they invariably dope them into outer space. Still, short of an onboard camera recording the event, its hard to know what actually happened or how.

The remark about not being able to confirm the kid's Autism until the autopsy seems utterly ludicrous. It just shows how the word has been thrown around so much in the media, everyone knows about Autism, but nobody - not even medical professionals - know what it is.

Yeah, that's why I thought it was strangely written. No insight or speculation into why it happened. Sad,.

One thing I don't get: Why does he need an autopsy? It seems that me that the cause of death is pretty clear. Perhaps not the cause of death itself, but that's not very relevant because they know the way in which he died...

autopsy can rule out prior injury or drugs that may have caused or contributed to death.

plus a review of prior medical records per autopsy protocols would confirm autism.

I've accidentally sprayed myself with pepper spray. I'd be super pissed off if someone did it to me.

Legal reasons. Every death has an autopsy so that nothing can happen like a doctor murdering a patient and saying "Well, it was clearly a heart attack. No need for an autopsy."

Judging from the imcomptence of some medical staff I've encountered in my life I wonder if the EMTs are partly to blame. I had an a**hole untrasound technican who refused to turn off the radio without an attitude. I wonder if they refused to turn off the siren and that just amphlified the boy's sensory distress. And/or perhaps they touched him in a way that was extremly uncomfortable and the only way he could get away was to jump from the ambulance. If I was ever in a situation where the EMTs needed to be called in and they kept harassing me, I would jump to to get away from them. Paramedics/EMTs need education about autism.
