Vitamin D supplements may benefit children with ASD

Vitamin D supplementation improved symptoms of autism in a recent trial.

Studies have shown an association between the risk of autism spectrum disorder and vitamin D insufficiency. In this latest study, 109 children with autism spectrum disorder were randomized to receive four months of vitamin D3 supplementation or a placebo.

"Autism symptoms -- such as hyperactivity, social withdrawal, and others -- improved significantly following vitamin D3 supplementation but not after receiving placebo," said Dr. Khaled Saad, lead author of the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry study.

Interesting.

I had two blood tests (two years ago and a few days ago); both results showed a vitamin D deficiency.

I am also deficient in that area.

My doc says it may be that D is the vitamin "of the day".

Like C, E and others have been in the past.
Still I take D3 gummy supplements.

I've been given a separate D3 daily for years.

It is interesting... I do have some doubts as to the veracity of the paper as it claims hyperactivity is a symptom of autism...

Adhd is listed as a possible comorbid condition, as are anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and sensory processing disorders... it is not, however, a diagnostic criteria

Everyone has deficient vitamin d nowadays. It may hit us harder.

It would be helpful if some of these studies included adults among their subjects. There are a few, but not very many. Of course, only children can be autistic...
