BOWLING ALONE

one of my recent interests is bowling. I would like your feedback as to whether it would appear strange for someone my age (23) to go to a bowling alley by myself at 10 in the morning. (early=no crowds) Would the people at the desk think me weird for going by myself?

I would view that person as kind of weird. But hey, who cares what other people think.

i don't see a problem with wanting to be alone and do the sport your interest in go for it.

I play pool billiards sometimes and there's a lot of people practising/playing on their own. Nothing wrong with it.

I dunno, and I wouldn't care. As long as you're having fun.
I go to the movies all the time by myself & try to go the earlier shows to avoid the lines & crowds.

I bowl. Before I had my kids, I worked in a bowling alley. There were often lone bowlers. I usually assumed they were practicing. So did all my co-workers.

This reminds me of the amusement park question of whether it is "weird" to go to an amusement park solo.

I will give my same response here - go ahead and go bowling by yourself if you enjoy the game.

You might want to consider renting the lane by the hour instead of paying by the game. Work out the cost for both ways of paying to see what is more economically feasible for you.

Also, if you are interested in meeting up with others, practicing bowling will make you desirable for league play and this is a nice, structured way to meet people and socialize.

PS - as for people giving you weird looks and such ... it really isn't any of their business. If someone says something to you, I'll give you some responses:

Person: "You're bowling alone?
You: "Yes"

Person: "Don't you feel weird bowling by yourself"
You: "No. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to (start my game) or (concentrate on my game) or (practice).

Person: "Only weird people bowl alone."
You: "My interests and hobbies are my business alone. Now, excuse me, I'm concentrating on my game"

Person: "Don't you have any friends?"
You: "I have no idea what would prompt you to ask this question. I'll pay you the respect of just not responding."

I doubt anyone would be so crass as to say anything. I also doubt that anyone would really find your bowling solo unusual anyway.

No dude it isn't weird at all...I bowl alone sometimes if I want to practice to get better...sure its more fun to go with a friend but sometimes you really want to work at bettering yourself and it's easier alone.

I see it all the time so it should actually be considered weird to bowl with a friend...well you get the point

Anyway that's a great deal for 3 hours of bowling and how good of a bowler are you? (I'm around a ~200 avg, with a 286/776 high)

all my life i've had to do things alone because i could never interest anybody else in doing anything with me. so if i didn't do things alone, my only alternative would be to stay home. i haven't been out to see a movie since 2001 when i went to see "AI-Artificial Intelligence" - i generally force myself to go out as a treat to myself, on my birthday- i'll eat at some restaurant somewhere, and it is always alone. i go at a time of the day when there aren't really too many other customers.

To be honest, if you look serious and engrossed enough, people will just presume you're pro.

You need to be confident and not care what others think- if you sort of shuffle on looking embarrassed, people will just presume that all your friends have stood you up. Though as Willard says, who cares?

If you're very self conscious, you could stick a sign up beforehand and say that you're planning on starting a bowling group (if you want a group that is), or tell anyone who approaches you that you'll be there at such and such a time and they're welcome to join in...

I will never understand why certain activities are supposedly not acceptable to do solo. That makes no sense to me.
