I don't understand when someone uses their hands to communicate. Example: When I worked my boss would gesture to put a call through and would have to go up to him and ask what he meant. I understand simple things like thumbs up.

You're talking about verbal gestures. They simply represent words or phrases. Like learning a new language, you don't understand all of them and it takes some time to get. Some people are better making or understanding them than others.

there are some books on gesture .you can download them.for once it body language and gesture was my special interest.i read some books and spend months on those though not like NTs but i understand gestures a little better.you can google for them.
