Suppose i'm (which i'm not, but let's pretend) going to throw a party and only aspies are invited, what sort of activities would be fun and appropiate? I guess loud music and flashing lights should be discarded, so what could we do together?

I think it might be appropriate to plan functional activities. You know, instead of only relying on social skills at a party for interaction we could go together on bus trips or hiking or something.

What's wrong with loud music ?
I listen to loud music on my mp3 player all the time 8)
I think the hardest part would be to find something everyone likes.
Seeing as most AS people have are only interested in one thing.
What are the odds of everyone having the same interest ?

So proberbly just talking about everyones axperiences of living with AS.
And maybe watching some humour movie.
I think most people like that.

If it was me I'd have a LAN party. Maybe some Age of Empires 3 and some Day of Defeat Source.

I think a party would have less structure than most aspies are comfortable with. I think it'd be better to take a one-day bus trip somewhere.

An All-Nighter at the Natural History museum!

But whatever, definitely some pre-announced theme or activity.
Meeting, alone, is not likely to provide the motivation, and could provide a disincentive.

I used board games*, with some success, as a focus for once a month gatherings.

*no, not the boring Monopoly etc. Interesting, lively ones.
Quick to learn, and not too long to play and justifying some thought.

Loud music wouldn't be so bad as long as you have some good speakers and nothing too screeching (mind you, I like a lot of the hard stuff but I get it - not everyone's ears are tuned to that).

We could go for the humor and talk about having a big EverQuest LAN party, nothing but AD&D, doing complex integrals while dressed up as Star Wars characters, but that's about where it stops. I think cards are usually a winner, some quality Hold'em and/or Spades would be an idea, enough liquor for people's anxiety issues, if we had some sports we could have stuff that's more about will to play rather than birth-given athletic talent (ie. back-yard volleyball, etc.) and heck, if we had a ping pong table and people felt like taking a break from it for a minute I can't seen why we couldn't have a couple rounds of aspie beerpong. Then again with a lot of this I think I'm just reflecting the house parties we've been having lately over my place, I know that's not how everyone gets down but still - it's an idea. Overall I don't think we're really that eccentric, we just happen to have AS.

Beerpong?! What's Beerpong?! I like beer and I like pingpong (even though I lack the coordination to hit the ball most of the time). Please explain. Your house parties sound like a lot of fun.

Also, I really like Emettman's idea about an All-Nighter at a Natural History museum. But it would have to be one like the Smithsonian in Wash DC. So much fun. And wouldn't it be great to spend that much time in a place like that with people who don't care if you are unexpectedly engrossed in the Ancient Seas section and want to stay there and talk to yourself about how wonderful it is for an hour straight? (Ooh, trilobites...) How liberating! No pressure to have to move on to the next exhibit unless only you want to!

You have 10 plastic dixie cups on either end of the table, in a 1/2/3/4 bowling pin type set up and each one is half filled with beer. You also have an extra dixie cup on the side where you wash the pingpong ball off if it hits the floor or after its landed in a beer. The whole point is to throw the ping-pong ball from your side into an opponent's cup and make the opponent who threw last drink the one it landed in. If you play 6-cup I think there's a rule where if you hit the center-back cup before sinking any of the others of if you have one missing aside from the very front you can make the other team drink all 6 (kind of like making the 8 ball first in pool I guess). As for throwing the ping-pong ball you can either have no bounce where it has to go directly or you can have a bouce rule where it can hit the table either once or indefinitely, my friends tend to just leave it opend to personal preference.

Well, to a point but we also had a lot of ugly drama coming of it as well - enough to where we had to stop throwing parties. It seems like our core group of friends can handle it but when they start bringing aquaintences or brother's or sister's friends we started getting the wrong kinds of people over there (and half the time we had no idea beforehand that they were coming, othertimes people who weren't invited just heard, showed up, and brought even more people we didn't particularly know or trust).

just because someone has AS doesn't automatcially mean they hate loud music/flashing lights.

I think this refers to the fact that many aspies are visually and auditorily sensitive, some more so than others. If you have a lot of people around in one area, you have no idea who may be or may not be overly sensitive, unless you made a checklist stipulating what sorts of sensory issues they have. But, discriminating against them would be the wrong thing to do.

Personally, I listen to music quite loudly myself, though I find myself at times seeking stimulation or excitement for some reason. Listening to heavy and loud music tends to give me the stimulation I so desire.

Personally, the only sport that I've ever taken an interest in is paddling, namely inflatable kayaking and whitewater rafting. I also do a bit of hiking on vacation trips, but then again I'm an outdoors enthusiast and an environmentalist. I don't like most sports, and I have no passion for partaking in them.

Parties? Forget it. I can't stand them. I get disoriented in crowded situations. Nor do I like the chaotic atmosphere. I like a rather calm atmosphere, or an atmosphere that I have some level of control over. Too many people at parties leads to extreme chaos. It's easier for me to be at party situations wherein I know the people. I have trouble with and feel very uncomfortable insinuating myself into social situations. And I find myself getting very bored.

Why not just take me to a carnival? That's sort of fun. I like rides that are many seem to consider frightening. Sort of like a nice thing to get involved with if you crave excitement once in a while. I'm not a thrillseeker, though I sort of desire stimulation.

I can easily handle loud sounds.
But the high pitch sound of being close to the tv is another thing.
If i stand close to it together with a non AS person i wil go crazy because it's so loud in my ears while they wil barely notice it.
I guess everyones different regarding sounds.
