I drink coke every day, but I never do loud burps from it. They just come up so quietly that it's hardly nothing. If I try forcing it out I just hiccup instead, or strain my ribs.

I'm a big fan of burping. How can something that makes you feel so much better and sound so amusing be wrong?!?

While I've never understood the mechanics behind making yourself burp, when burps come naturally to me (after eating, usually), I do everything I can to make the most of it (provided I'm alone or in accepting company). In other words, I push it out as loud and hard as I can to relieve the most pressure.

I was very uncomfortably sick a year or two ago, when I just couldn't relieve any pressure for about 24 hours. This happened twice in one week, and has never happened before or since. It's probably the most physically miserable I've ever been, though.

There's the little burbs that come from the back of my throat and then there's the deep burps that come all the way up from inside my esophagus/stomach. The former are voluntary but not very impressive. The latter can only be coaxed out by drinking something really fast.

I have a problem with burping too much - I think I might have an ulcer...

I have some trouble with it and know another autistic person who has serious trouble with it. Since some autistic people have poor body awareness and trouble learning movements that are internally-based, it seems plausible that autism can have something to do with it, even though it's not everyone (nothing about autistic people is everyone).

back in medieval times, it was considered a compliment to the food-preparer if you belched and farted during and after the meal- this was considered a sign of good digestion.

to the OP, please see a GI specialist. folks who suffer from inability to burp may also suffer from bad esophogeal motility. this is most common with folk who have esophageal scar tissue from untreated GERD.
