Air Conditioners...
I just got an inverter split system installed (a long term goal of mine was to have A/C) and I'm very disappointed with it.
There's an ugly 80's-looking unit on the wall which blows air onto seating areas. I was told it was 'whisper quiet' but that's only when you have the fan on it's lowest and least powerful setting.
Worst of all, I was wanting one for summer nights so I can sleep under heavy blankets in summer (I live in Australia), but it only goes down to 18 degrees celcius! (about 67 degrees fahrenheit, I think, not real sure about the conversion) ugh, which is like a sunny winters day temperature. I rang the company to ask if air conditoners went down any lower in temp than that and they said 'ooooh no, that's like food refrigeration temperature, you get icing problems at temps lower than that'. So any ideas for getting cooler temps out of air conditoners or whether 'icing' is a problem. I probably should have done more research but it's like you have to know someone who's got one and get the same unit, and being AS, I never know many people.
It seems like really, they're just heaters rather than coolers, and their cooling is limited.
i'm a cold air freak as well, and have found similar problems with newer AC's - they just don't get that cold, and if it's cool outside, they actually heat the room.
i've found if you operate them with vents open on cooler nights they work better. also, counterintuitively, if you leave a door to the room open a crack it seems to help it keep cool. maybe it gives it something to condense?
i'm starting to think the best solution is a subterranean home - 55 degrees baseline to start. i'd still need the white noise and air mvmt, but starting at 55 a fan would do.
air conditioners are one of the spawns of satan. not only do they recycle air which everyone else has breathed... brothe?...whatever, which is disgusting enough, but by both using energy and creating heat, they add to global warming, which means you have more need for airconditioning, and so on, and so forth.

Mmmm I like that idea, it would be so quiet!
Now that I've been using the A/C a while, it's ok, it gets cold enough (for a temperate/mediterranean climate). It wouldn't do if you were in the hotter parts of the country though. I often have the doors open a bit, the dogs are always wanting to go in and out, sigh.
When I have my AC on, I keep it at its lowest and blowing constantly. But today it is in the high 60s and I was actually getting chilly and had to turn the AC off. For the most part, I am a cool freak as well and often leave the windows open in the winter. However, my AC system (or the apartment's rather) has usually been sufficient. Though the electric bills are atrocious.

Living units in very cold climates with snow are built with steep roofs.
As for hot climates having the windows with over hangs for the summer and let light and heat in the winter you need to do a site plan as to how the sun tracks across the sky. How this relates to keeping a house cool you most likely live in a house were there was no design for the hot climate. How to oufit a house like this first get 2 layer glass windows. Get overhangs put on the windows and put window coating like sunglass use than a good cooling unit. ![]()
