I know it's a joke but I think they are making fun of special intrests, (perhaps not intentionaly) and how most NTs want us to feel about our special intrests. Maybe it's time for me to go to sleep.

no they aren't in any way. The "expert" admits he hates himself for studying something "so boring".

We in no way find our special interests boring, and you know that.

the entire point is he didn't even know why he was doing it.

this clip was just hilarious, and got me to check out a few more.

Byt basicaly don't NTs want us to hate ourselves for our special intrests because they find them boring. Anteaters aren't boring, they are cute and facinating. Pippin has to go to the vet in the morning and it's 3AM here so I should get to bed.

I think you're reading a little too much into it.

That's cool that you find them cute and fascinating; but the whole joke was that even the researcher didn't know why he was doing it.

Yep, definitely reading waaaaaay too much into it. It's just a joke about the researcher who got sick of studying anteaters.

My mum wanted me to hate myself, for my special interests. She told me, that it wasn't normal for me to have them. The last time that she tried to make me hate myself for my special interests, were those days leading up to Thanksgiving, that I was spending at her trailer. I was ready to give up on her,, and tell her to put me in the hospital, if she hated me, so much.

She sure wizened up, the the day after the night, that my ex friend got the paramedics to drive me to the emergency ward of the hospital, for being obsessed, with The Kinks. My mum doesn't really care, either way. She doesn't care if they're my special interest, the third time around, but she also doesn't care about the passing of one of the original members, either. She cares more about my sister's feelings, like she always has, but that's a different story all together.

There are NTs with "special interests", it's just that most people do not want to be involved in a subject or dislike to think (only the fool is happy  ).

My mother keeps telling me I am narrow-minded and should go out and be more sociable and normal in the way I think and in what I like because she thinks I'll never be happy that way.

This is mostly because people think the only way to reach happiness is to do what makes them happy. Like marrying and having children. Partying all night long. Being surrounded by so-called friends. Listening to loud music and blinding yourself with strong coloured lights. Drinking until you throw up and passe out.

I feel an intense feeling of happiness when I read something about linguistics, I do not know if anyone ever felt that but it's amazing and real. I would be miserable trying to "enjoy my youth".

No one needs to follow trends to be happy.

I find they mostly just want me to shut up and get my face out of the book so they can tell me - with eye contact - about what interests THEM.

As H used to sat to me, "Did you ever think you are the odd one?" The assumption is the majority - and only the majority - and only the majority's interests - are good.

NTs have lots of special interests but they SHARE them. Sports, video games, members of the opposite sex, Paris Hilton, etc. Its' just that they have the idea that only those special interests are acceptable. Go speak with a bridezilla with french manicured nails and makeup so thick you'd have to scrape it off and tell her that my wedding was simple I got my cake from Walmart and let someone else pick it out- then we'll see if a special interest in a NT pops up!

*shrug* My special interests are within reading, writing and renaissance reenactment. Since I found a renaissance club to join, I blend right in with that group. NTs may look at me funny if I'm walking around in my garb but it's because of my clothes, not my AS and that makes me feel better. :)

I painfully recognize the attitude in that clip. This sort of thing should be regarded as hate speech - the same as making fun of blacks or gays. There is a difference, though, in that being black or gay doesn't require qualities like perseverence, whereas studying anteaters for 15 years does. And NTs absoultely hate those fleeting moments when they realize someone else has qualities that they never will possess.

this. and the funny thing is...no one said most of the people who just follow this routine for routine's sake are happy; it's just "assumed" that they are.

I don't have anyone to talk to about my special interests because nobody I know wants to talk about rare, congenital diseases or personality psychology (so far, I've studied the MBTI and the Enneagram in depth. I'm looking for other theories to find personalities that coorelate with each other), exumpt from a couple of nurses and a hairdresser or two.

Oh, and Mary Wollescraft said in a part of A Vindictation of the Rights of Women that, "I see people wanting to pursue an interest for sensual experience, only to flit to another interest. I would like to see more people pursuing an intellectual interest and stick to it.", or at least my simplilfied version of the sentence.

The video has utterly nothing to do with AS or Autism special interests. It's a satire about NT's!

"Get good grades so you can go to a great college and get a really good job with a company where you can pursue a life long career!"

That's the "NT" way man! Yet how many people do exactly that and end up hating every minute of the job they end up with?

That's the whole point. It's got nothing whatever to do with Autism.

BTW: I think that guy spent a lot of time watching Bob Newhart when he was younger. It's a hilarious clip if you get where it's really coming from.

I don't think this is intended as a joke about special interests. I think it is part of the very large parody genre that makes fun of TV show styles. In this case, what they are parodying is those morning shows that trot out a different expert every morning and the show host has to fake a fascination with what the expert actually does love. In this parody of that type of show, the expert is even less interested in his own special interest than the host is. This requires the host to go far beyond what actual hosts have to do in faking an interest in the expert's interest.

The person being made fun of in this parody is not experts with special interests. They are making fun of morning show hosts who have to fake an interest in something every single morning.
