Why do NT Women get that whiny pitch in their voice whenever they haven't seen each other for awhile? "Ohh... Look at how good you look!" ... "Oh! I haven't seen you in foreverrrrrr..."

I think the whiny pitch is like my version of forks on a chalkboard.

How strange to find this post since I was just thinking about this today! It drives me nuts too.

I have no idea why women who have these childish, treble voices don't try to modify them. Get four or five of them together and it sounds like a bunch of seagulls; very annoying.

They drive me up the wall, too, but then I'm a natural alto. Why don't they modify them? If they all sound like that this could be a regional accent, so they don't notice it any more than you all notice your own accents. And in some cultures and subcultures the high treble is considered charming and feminine so of course they adopt it. They get praised if they have it and criticized if they don't. I saw a video about a day in the life of a Japanese department store once and that point was made.

I'm betting on a regional accent because I used to have to call suppliers all over the country and you wouldn't believe some of the speech patterns I heard.

(I don't know about that, I have met many non-NT people who will talk the hind leg off a donkey if you don't shut them up!)

I have posted about this before and I'm glad there are others who are annoyed by this. I will even choose my friends because of the tone of their voice. (of course, not solely on that basis) If a woman has a high-pitched voice, particularly if it's breathy or soft, I can't stand to be around her! It really makes me angry...not really angry, just highly agitated! I just want to get away from the annoying sound! I think for some, this is because they have never outgrown their "little princess" or "Daddy's little girl" syndrome. They still use baby talk!

This is also closely related to another thread about soft touch. I hate it! Most women give wimpy hugs and hankshakes and I can't stand it!! I've tried hard to change these things but they remain. I'm not proud of it because I should be able to move beyond it; it seems shallow; but tell that to people who hate nails on a chalkboard or a spotlight shone directly into their eyes!

Everytime I end up engaged in one of these high-pitched whining conversations, the only thing I can do is imitate the sound and say very sarcastically, "Oh, yay!" I hate it so much.

One of my friends does this whenever she's apologizing because she thinks it sounds cute. I can't stand it!

As for really high voices, I've noticed that they get higher as they're talking about something shallow. Like they'll go down a bit if they're talking about something serious, then get all high when they're talking about clothes or whatever.

Well, tell her to apologize like a woman and not like a toddler, and tell her to get her thumb out of her mouth!

It's a hopeless cause - she just apologizes more. Believe me, I've tried. I also try not to offend the few people who get along with me - she deals with things I do, I figure I can deal with that at least. For whatever reason, the rest of the group thinks the baby talk is cute. (And I'm bashing my head against the table in the background, but apparantly that just adds to the cuteness. )

Very true, very true.

I dunno why. Maybe they just do it because they're exspected to do it or they really missed that person...but it is a little strange.

I hate how the words, Like and Totally are thrown into every sentence, along with the Ah, sound. I also hate the Up-turns that make everything sound like a Question, because they make me think that everything that they're saying really is a question. And it sounds very Un-Polished, cheap and trashy. I'm very conservative when it comes to Social Ettiquette. I'll talk to people who share my Social Standards. I avoid those who don't share my Social Standards, as much as I possibly can. I feel very British, after typing this Paragraph. Maybe I WAS given up for Adoption by a Destitute London Couple.
