One of things that really irks me about autism in the media, autism resources, autism awareness and all that stuff is that its like 99% focused around kids and families. It often provides advice to familys trying to deal with autism in a kid. Theres very little focus given to adults with autism as well as focus given to the individual. You dont hear much stories about autism from the autistic individuals mouth. Its always from the parents or the family members. Face it, autism doesnt just go away once your an adult. I feel there should be more resources around for adults 18+. As for autism from the individuals perspective, I mean is there just a small percentage of autistic individuals that can speak for themselves or something? I guess im not completely aware of the entire spectrum, us aspies(guessing thats most of the people on this board) are a small percentage of the spectrum. However, I dont know what the percentage is.
I agree with you. I was just at an Autism conference and everything seemed to be focused on children with autism and it does seem to be the prevailing attitude in the general public that it only affects children, not sure what they think happens to these children when they grow up.
I think the big problem is that a lot us high functioning Auties and Aspies were not recognized pre-1994 so the majority of us grew up without a diagnosis... thus we're just now learning that there's a name and a reason for all the troubles we've had. And many of our population are still "ghosts", undiscovered, and still struggling in the dark, NOT knowing about it....
But I completely agree. There needs to be an awakening - a bit of publicity for those of us who are learning about it all now. Some plan to get us out of the holes we fell into and get us the training and information we need to climb out and make good of our lives... Sure, some of us have made it.... but many haven't. And some of those that haven't could live much happier and more successful (as defined by each person individually) with that touch of attention...
It's like adoption agencies. They spend more time on the younger kids - the ones they figure are more likely to impress the parents - they've given up on the older ones. And in this case... that's just not fair.

Forgive me... I'm having a grumpy night. Spent 2 hours today trying to get the phone company to tell me my minimum bill payment.... and arrange to pay it.... shunted to 19 different people... no exaggeration... and still haven't found any progress or information...
