I really don't understand empathy.

I overly react to a lot of things and I am very sensitive. I have very strong emotions and react more so than what NT people would. A lot of the times I don't know why I'm even crying during shows. I can never put myself into the shoes of whatever character or person, so it's not empathy. It's sympathy I assume.

I over react to things people say, but that's probably due to me taking everything literally when people too often joke and use sarcasm.

Are any of you overly emotional or overly sympathetic?

I'm also a highly sensitive person. I cry easily. It's better than being accused of having no empathy. I have the emotional age of a 9 year old and the mental age of a 65 year old.

Same for me.

Considering some of the things I've cried over. Ridiculous things like, breaking a plastic filter and feeling bad that it cost 30 dollars to replace. I helplessly tried to fix it, even going as far to melt the plastic so I could mend it, it didn't work and I almost cried.

I can cry for hours over seeing a dead/injured insect or animal, but if it is a person, I often react inappropriately and get accused of not caring and being callous. I don't really understand why - it's more complicated with people? I don't know. So I have been seen as being oversensitive and not caring, at the same time.

I had a similar event. When I was 6 I felt so sorry for a fly that got caught in the bathtub. I tried it give it some water since you usually give pets water. Instead it drowned. i was very sad.

my emotions are usually so subtle I'm barely aware of them until it's too late and they've flooded my mind. I often under-react to things and I think it comes off as me not caring. I care, it just seems distant somehow.

Sometimes I cry just because something's pretty.

I was a complete basket case as a child because I was so emotional, lol...

Nowadays it's easier for me to hold said emotions back, but regarding the empathy vs. sympathy now... I don't understand the semantics. I'm definitely compassionate. I have a goal of being a successful musician; if for some reason I hit it big and get a lot of money, I will only take that which I need (maybe a little more, for instrument funds, etc...) and the grand majority will be used towards charity organizations, world organizations, etc... I see myself as a peacemaker at times, I can comprehend whether someone's going through a hard time, etc......

I just wish we could all get along and it be all happy peace and sunshine. X) Well, sometimes.

I don't understand. How do you feel when you are like that? Why does it come out in tears? Tears are for sadness - I know people cry for good things but I don't understand. :(

I know I can't answer for Squirrelrat, but I'd like to take a stab at answering your question...it's when something is so overwhelming (something that touches you deeply) and it comes out as tears...but it's a "happy" cry, instead of being sad. One example I can give is the anticipation of meeting my daughter when I was pregnant...and then after I gave birth, and finally saw her...I felt so overwhelmed with happiness, that I just started crying.

Same here. It makes no sense.

But what makes sense about AS?

And people defend this disorder?

I am very emotional, yet I find sparing thought for other people to be embarrassing at times, and I feel highly irritated by my mental fog much of the time.

I tend to be very emotional and fall apart easily, mainly at injustices, though to be honest it's mostly when I'm the victim. I do also get very upset at the news, because there is so much suffering, as well as cruelty and injustice that could be avoided if it were not intentionally perpetrated by people in power for some kind of political gain.

I also can understand being overwhelmed by something good and crying as a result. I tend to start crying when someone extends their understanding or sympathy, which often confuses them, and I feel very embarrassed.

Because I think about things too much I make myself anxious and worried and upset, mostly over stupid things I can't help. I work hard at not getting attached to people so that I can avoid these feelings.

When I'm coming on my period it's the absolute worst. I get these stupid reminiscing feelings about my past and then I cry. But mostly it is out of frustration, that something happened I could have prevented or that I did something to screw things up.

I saw a video of some very cute rabbits that almost made me cry. I was overwhelmed with emotion. I don't know what you'd call it. I was just very happy that the rabbits were so cute.

I either underact or overact to things. I can't find a middle ground.
