who else is fed up with people mispronouncing asperger's that way? why would anyone assume that someone has a syndrome with such a parodic and stupid name? people are friggin' ignorant ._.

Speaking as a language freak, that is almost inevitable given the structural norms of most forms of English - in fact, in SOME forms of English I might expect worse.

Speaking as a mockee, there is almost no word that will not be distorted into a "funny" and insulting variant.

As long as a group can be identified, it does not matter what the name is - it WILL be turned into something PG13.

I have never heard it pronounced another way other than Assburgers or Assp(b)ergers -- and this from people who work with autistics. I find the difference very subtle, it doesn't matter.

The difference between a P and a B is very slight. In fact, it's the same sound except a B uses vocal cords and a P does not.

Given that Hans Asperger was Austrian, the proper pronunciation should be closer to AH-spair-ger. But most Americans either are terrible at pronouncing foreign words/names or just don't care (or both).

As far as I know, in the UK it's pronounced asperjers (not sure, since I've never heard it pronounced that way), but in the US the pronunciation is with a hard gh sound, so, yes, it sounds like assburgers except for the slight distinction in sound between a p and a b. That's not an incorrect pronunciation.

while it is an easy mispronunciation to make, i'm speaking more about the people who mock me for having it under the misguided and stupid conception that someone would actually have something with that name.

instead of "did you say assburgers?" or something of the like, i get "assburgers? haha wtf is that?" or something else stupid and mean.

i guess i should be more selective about who i tell about this. i'm still confused about how to handle it, honestly, my diagnosis was only a few months ago.

If people arent going to say AH-spair-ger, they might as well say asperjer.

It's an ugly sounding word any way you say it.

Asperger means 'sprinkle with holy water' or asprinkle something

i was always under the impression it was "assburgers". it simply seems to make more sense to me. i am directing a student film in my school which is an all-aspie cast(my friends mostly) that is an adaptation of the classic fictional movie within seinfeld "sack-lunch". as a play on words we named our movie "as-lunch" pronounced "ass-lunch" its not meant to be a joke or something perverted but many of my fellow students laughed anyway, even after we explained to them the condition. ive simply never heard it pronoucned any other way.

That's why I'm glad that it's just going to be called 'autism' (in the DSM-V).

I don't really care. I sometimes call it that way as a joke to describe jerks with it.

I get mouthy at them, I say
"If I'm an assburger, then you are the BUTTNUGGETS
that go with this order."
