My daughter and I like to "sit like birds" as my wife says, on our feet with our knees tucked up to our chest, it's very comfortable and stable but I don't see anyone else ever do it. One reason is it looks a bit funny, I don't do it out much, unless I'm with my daughter in line, I can put my knees down a bit to make a seat for her. I know flexibility as often a trait autistics share and that leads to some uncomfortable looking natural positions. Anyone else share this or have their own favorite pretzel position?

Have you ever watched a documentary on native people in South America or Africa that still live in the traditional way? Many of them will squat down in a position similar to what you describe because it IS a very comfortable position and those peoples do not usually have chairs. So I don't think your preference for that "bird-sit"-position is so much out of line, it's just that the people around you are not used to seeing it.

I personally love to sit Indian style or a semi-version of it where I only fold one of my legs, leaving the other one stretched out. I assume this position even on chairs or other furniture and think it is very comfortable. My family has long since given up trying to talk me into sitting "normally", mostly due to the fact that I tend to sit in the usual way whenever I am in public, seeing as I don't like having my trousers soiled by my shoes.

When at home I sit in some odd postures. Sort of folded up. Legs and arms crossed, leaning forward, knees pulled up some.

Full lotus, for me. That's been my "default" sitting position since before I knew it had a name, and I will sit this way on chairs, stools, etc. Heck, it's how I'm sitting, at my desk, now!

Wow I'm sitting like that right now. No joke.

That's funny because when I saw Birdy, I thought the main character had a lot of autistic traits.

It's a very snug position. Like a self hug, and with everything tucked in and warm.

Apparently, some people actually have difficulty tucking up neatly like that, and I think that's why some people don't do it.
