Autism and substitute teachers
Because people with ASD can be resistant to change and often need routine, I was wondering how you or your child deals with/dealt with subs. I have had a hard time with them, if I know there will be a sub, it's OK. (It also helps if I know the sub). It seems to me teachers try to get subs that the kids know anyway. In other words, they often try to get the same subs back.
I remember I had a sub in grade 3, I really liked her and I thought she was the best sub ever, she was there for a week or two. This was in October, then sometime around April, we had her again, I didn't think she was as good but I still liked her.
We had a lot of horrible subs in grade 5. One lady (who we had for 2 or 3 days) seemed to "play favourites" with the kids a little. She was EXTREMELY strict! We had 2 others who were also very strict. Same with grade 4. We had this one lady who made us work SUPER hard.
I have had nice subs too. In grade 5, I had this one sub for a week, he was REALLY nice. I can't remember why, but I remember he was EXTREMELY nice.
Lots of kids like having subs because they don't give as much work, they play games and they often don't worry about the kids' behaviour all that much. However, I have found the opposite.
I had a sub for one of my classes today, I don't have an opinion on her because she didn't do a lot of teaching. (We had to work on our projects).
How have your (or your child's) experiences been with subs?
Oh, and my name can easily be mispronounced, it's hard one for people with certain accents to say. I used to tell them to call me "soupsap" if they had a hard time saying it. Now, I tell them to call me by my initials. However, they can usually say it fine, I have to correct 35%-40% of the time, so this is a problem, I mean, I understand that they don't know my name, it's just a touch on the annoying side. It also depends on the mood I am in.
Didn't like them because they were nothing but babysitters that gave the class a wordpuzzle or something and then let everybody be noisy.
The only time I had a problem with them is because I wait inside the classroom when class is over until most people are out of the hallways. I stayed in and it was the last class so the sub was confused and awkwardly asked me if I were being bullied. Shook my head and then he left.
I guess that shows that subs are clueless or are not given proper information on students.
I remember in a very early grade my teacher had health problems and had to leave for the majority of the year. We got a new teacher and it confused me, but nothing beyond that.
