Stupid things people say

when i was in elementary school, my teachers pretty much gave up on the idea of me having legible handwriting (since writing hurts for me) and it was decided that i would type my assignments... except, the school didn't actually want to give me an IEP (i never had one, despite the fact that i had at least some accommodations for almost my entire school career) so they "let" me bring a computer from home. (it was a desktop running i think windows 3.1, and i named it spot.)

one day it was raining, so we had indoor recess. i didn't feel like playing with the other kids, so i played solitaire on my computer until it was time for class again. when i ran to my desk, i forgot to close the window, and shortly afterward got in trouble for playing games "during school". it's like, excuse me??? you can't even use the "school property" excuse because that's MY computer, that i used during MY time (i consider recess as having been mine, not hers) and when you yelled at me, i was sitting across the room from it!

what are stupid things people have said to you? (or times when they didn't understand, or whatever)

They made you bring a desktop computer in? That's pretty stupid. I was lucky in primary school because while everyone else did PE I was allowed to play games on a school computer

As for a silly thing someone said, it's hard to pick just one, but something I remember is "you can't do that." That simple sentence, or some variation of it, when said in response to anything I've said I plan to do, is something I regard as very stupid indeed.

Could you please expand on that? I have this same issue but have never heard anything similar from anyone else.

I remember when I was seven, my mom gave me some school supplies and she gave me these two black pencils. My aid used to get mad at me for using one of them because it "was not a school pencil" but the pencil led was gray so why did it matter what I used?

it's called dysgraphia. i'm not sure if i'm officially diagnosed with it (my mom still won't tell me what i'm ACTUALLY diagnosed with, although i get the impression that it's NLD which has dysgraphia as a symptom, although i think i have asperger's because NLD doesn't seem to include obsessions)

there are a few kinds of dysgraphia, and unless i am mistaken (most of my knowledge on the subject is from wikipedia) the type of dysgraphia that causes pain when writing is called motor dysgraphia.

that's another thing, i eventually got an alphasmart instead of using a regular computer, and kids would constantly ask to play with it. it's just a keyboard with a crappy screen! where's the novelty?
they also would be like "why do you have that?" and i'd be like "i need it because i have bad handwriting" and they'd be like "oh, i have bad handwriting too, can i have one?"
my responses to that:
1) sure! i paid for this myself because my mom got sick of fighting the school system, and as i said i never actually had an IEP so we had to pay for everything ourselves! on the plus side, it's MINE so the school couldn't take it when i graduated
2) you have "bad handwriting" just like me? then why aren't you crying by the time you finish writing 2 paragraphs? doesn't it hurt??? haven't your fingers rejected the pencil and refused to move properly?

also, when the i got a dana instead of the alphasmart (bigger alphasmart, touch screen, running palm OS) they'd all want to play the games on it or whine about not having one or get all freaked out that it OMG DOESN'T HAVE INTERNET
it's like you really want to play a roguelike? you know you can play those on computers? this is mine. i'm not grabbing your phone or ipod from you and going "OMG CAN I PLAY???"

then the last half of my senior year the dana gave up (3 keys decided not to work and i was just like whatever) so i got permission to bring my laptop to school... and people told me how OMGLUCKY i was to have a laptop and bring it to school!

it's like, yeah, it's nice to get to type your assignments. but there are bad sides... like the fact that something handwritten is usually accepted to be by you, whereas something typed could be from anywhere. when you have issues with handwriting such that your quality of writing goes up drastically when something is typed, it's really easy for a teacher who doesn't like you to accuse you of plagarism...

not that i have experience with that or anything... *major sarcasm*

edited to add: there was also one incident where another student asked to play with the alphasmart and i let her just to shut her up... instructing her to stay within file 8 (the file i never put anything important in, just so whiny people could play), not to let anyone else touch it, and only to mess with things she herself wrote.

so she gave it to a classmate when i wasn't looking, who promptly exited file 8 and deleted an entire file's worth of notes.

no one was disciplined at all for this, because it was apparently all my fault for not backing everything up.

oh, and none of my teachers cared that i was suddenly missing all my notes for their classes, since it was my fault and all and i should just deal with it.
