I have ALWAYS sucked with names. But I just realized it's not just with people. I have always referred to our pets as "hey cat", or "hi dog". It's like I take use the simplest label I can come up with. A dog is "dog", a cat is "cat", a snake is "snake", or what ever. I had several pet lizards as a kid in a real nice terrarium. Never named any of them.

Of course, referring to people as "hey woman" doesn't work out so well.

For some reason this struck me as a little humorous.

Yeah, I read somewhere that some young autistic kids don't use nouns much. Even if using nouns would make things easier, rather they use descriptions. Like banana would be yellow curved squishy fruit. But this is a very simple example usually its proper nouns that they replace.
I do that thing with hello lady or hello little boy too. Its just the simplist description. Unless you've known the person for a long time. And to prevent confusion you use the name.

I thought it was pretty normal to describe things instead of using a noun, many people seem to do that (I know that I do that when I cannot see or hear the word in my head).

As for giving names, I don't remember people's names (or faces), however I give names to many objects and pets (and I can usually recognize them) . My computer is called 37-713.

One of my "friend" never give names to pets or objects and she is pretty "NT" (though she has depression now), I guess it depends on people though some facts could be easily explain by face blindness, thinking in pictures or things like that. I know nobody who give names to objects and many people who would not give name to pets unless they are cats and dogs.

I suspect it is relatively common, but for that matter stimming is not unheard of among NTs. What you're saying about not having the word in your head seems relevant. Names for things other than what they are just makes things more complex. I have to remember "cat" and "fluffy" - two separate identifiers for the same object. My search pattern finds "cat" before it finds "fluffy" so cat is what gets used.

Ha! I never heard this related to autism, but I definitely do that too! Especially with the names of things... I do a lot of pointing and calling things "that thingy over there, no... over there". LOL

I call my cat cat or her name Sunny - I interchange between the two of them.

I never use their names. I don't recall ever doing so for any pets. Surely I must occasionally, but to the best of my recollection, nope.

When I was, I dunno, maybe 14, I found an abandoned kitten out in front of the house. We decided to keep her and, since I found her, I got to name her. Her name was <myfirstname> <mylastname>'s cat.

No, really. That was her name. Poor thing must've been embarrassed when she had to introduce herself to other cats.

Yup, I totally do that. Most people think it's because I'm a writing major and like to show off my descriptive skills. I'll just let them think that.
