This may sound weird, but since I was a child I have always found getting out of the shower/bath to be very difficult because of how cold it is. I realize that it is unpleasant for everyone, but I think that most people, when they get out of the shower, do not immediately turn into a small huddle on the floor, clutching their towel with a sense of desperation and unable to move. I remember being little and my mom telling me "Just dry yourself off and then you won't be cold," but I was too cold to move enough to dry myself off. I still have this problem. I often stay in the shower longer than i need to or want to because I am dreading that horrible feeling that comes as soon as I turn the water off.

I always thought I was just a tremendous wimp, but now I am wondering whether it is actually a much more intense experience for me than for most people. So I'm curious ... what's it like for you? Mildly unpleasant? Unbearable? In between?

You probably have sensory overload. I too would stay in the shower a while, not liking the cold feeling. I'll bet sex feels great for you.

I love getting my hot water fix. getting out is one of the best things because it reminds you of how comfortable you were in there

The solution is simple: Buy a small electric heater and make the bathroom very warm while you shower. Then getting out will be far nicer. I have a horror of showers for this exact reason and can never shower and must take sit-down baths instead.

I'm asexual, actually.

Yeah, I'm diagnosed with sensory processing disorder.

That's a good idea! Why didn't I think of that?

Maybe electricity and bathrooms aren't such a good mix? :skull:

i have a problem with this and was actually thinking about this when i got out of the shower. Luckily my bathroom has a ceiling heater already. It'll pour out heat so it's nice and comfortable.

..what i did before was turn the heat way up on the water so that when i got out, the coolness was relief...

Could you keep an additional, large towel ready in a convenient spot so that you could snatch it as soon as you cracked open the door of the shower stall? That way you could wrap yourself up in one towel (or just put it around your shouldes like a cape) to keep warm and use a second towel to start drying yourself.

This is the reason that I prefer baths over showers. I have the same issues getting out of the shower.

I hate getting out of the shower on a cold day, but I never thought about it as being related to AS or HFA. I won't use an outdoor hot tub in cool weather either. We have a nice one and my wife wishes I would use it. It's just too much of an unpleasant shock to go from warm water to cool air. However, I'll go outside in 30-degree weather with no shirt, as long as I'm dry.

I like to have a towel accessible so that I can pull it in while the shower is running. Then I can turn off the shower and dry without opening the door and letting out all the steam. Makes the experience much better.

By the time my long, hot shower is over, the bathroom is all warm and steamy anyway, so it's usually not a problem for me.

Ive got a great idea!
When you want to get out of the shower, turn the water to ice cold, then the air will feel lovely and warm in comparison.
Iam not going to try it myslef mind.

I have the same problem getting out of my warm bed. I doubt it has anything to do with ASD.

I don't like getting out of hot shower or a warm bed. When I was little my mom used to warm my clothes for me in the winter. I don't know if it has anything to do with AS, but if it's very severe it may be a form of sensory problems. If someone touches me with a cold hand, I can feel the "imprint of it for about 10 minutes, like it's burning me.
