Nonverbal learning disorder
None, other than my experience with a certain MishMish who was a perennial antagonist on Aspergia, who seems to fit the bill!
This encounter did provoke me explore the subject, and it seems to me that such people can be intelligent, inquisitive and explorative, while lacking the breadth of imagination that marks autistics apart. I have read reports that proffesionals in the field cannot disguingish between aspies and NVLD's, but, evidently, they also lack that "breadth"?
Me, me!
I've been diagnosed with NVLD. My own personal opinion *not validated by any professionals* is that it's a mild form of Aspergers, or perhaps the "low end" of the autistic spectrum. The main "selling point" of NVLD is a large discrepency between verbal skills and math skills. I was always very good at verbal stuff and AWFUL at math, no matter how muhc help I had, which led a learning specialist person to diagnose me with NVLD. I haven't gotten a diagnoses of AS (I don't really care to get one, since I'm not sure what good it would do me), but I'm pretty sure I would be diagnosed with it if so. I have a lot of the typical AS traits: hypersensitivity, obsessive interests, extreme confusion about anything social, etc. I can pass as "normal" with effort, but I usually don't bother, since it gets exhausting. Because not very many people have heard of NLD, I think the label is more confusing than anything else.
I can only speak for myself, but I've always had a very active imagination. Sometimes too active... ![]()
