Can NTs Have Special Interests?

Well, can they? I mean, to the degree that people with AS do? I know I've never really noticed any of my friends getting as "obsessed" with certain subjects as I do. Is it possible for an NT person to have a special interest and no other Aspie traits?

It is possible. Some people are naturally driven in specific areas and can become very successful. It's only when you meet other criteria as well that you are diagnosed with an ASD.
An abnormal interest by itself isn't enough to warrant a diagnosis.

NTs can have special interests to the degree that we do. It's just that the interests aren't as unusual. All I have to do is walk into the craft room at my clubhouse and I see the evidence right before my eyes.

Yes, I've seen it. I think that by far the commonest is sports.

I have a friend whose special interest is Edgar Allen Poe. She loves memorizing his poetry and reciting it to people, and she owns a Poe action figure, and she even plans on having a daughter named Annabelle! She was tested for autism but didn't fit the criteria; she has ADHD though.

My brother also has special interests, though I'm a little iffy about labeling him an NT. When he was a child/young teen, his special interests were Arnold Schwarzenegger, the US Marine Corps and firearms. I'm pretty sure he owns nearly every Schwarzenegger film that wasn't (intended to be) a comedy. At one point he had his bedroom decked out in Marine Corps paraphernalia and he was dead-set on joining when he turned 18. He knew everything there was to know about firearms and was an avid collector of them, especially ones of foreign make, and he loved to disassemble and reassemble them. He also showed them off to people whenever they came over to the house.

My brother's gotten older and his special interests have changed, though he never really stops caring about his past interests and sometimes revisits them. His current interests are Germany during WWI/WWII, the late singer Johnny Cash and the late comedian George Carlin.

Are you kidding? Their special interest can be more intense. Think: SEX

Just one example. Football, guns, politics, shoes, NSYNC, etc.

NTs don't have a corner on special interests in sex. Just look around on any forum like this for the "I don't have a girlfriend, my life is over" threads.

Yep definitely, although mine change a bit over the years. I do perceive its a bit unusual though.
At an extreme of NTs with special interests I have one friend who since school has only really been interested in racing cars. He constructs them and races them, thats pretty much his sole interest and has been for 25 years.

But its true most people don't, most of my aquantances and friends well..I would go so far as to say they do not actually have any interests Not so that I would notice.

Everyone has interests.
