On the first day of my Political Science Class my professor talked a little bit about the Americans with Disabilities Act and the colllege has to abide by that law and provide proper services for all the disabled (that probbaly isn't the politically correct term anymore, I'm not sure). He mentioned a few past students, a morbidally obese man having to have a bigger desk and chair, then he talked about a young man with Asperger's Syndrome. According to my professor the guy couldn't stop farting (loudly) in class.
I'm personally in the lower end of the Autistic Spectrum; I was shocked by this and unsure if this was common among more severe parts of the spectrum or Aspies. So I have to ask...Is farting in public loudly without concern something found among the Autistic Community? Forgive me if I seem naive or stupid for asking.

It sounds like that professor was intent on bashing disabled people, and sometimes when people do that they exaggerate or twist facts to make the story sound worse than it really was.

As far as the farting specifically, it is possible that a person could be socially unaware that others found it obnoxious, but I've not heard of that being some common, major issue with autistic people.

It seems to me that professor's intended message was, "disabled people are disgusting freaks, who, through the ADA force others to have to endure their freakishness." Given that, I personally wouldn't trust his stories to be accurate.

I understand how you think he was bashing disabled people. But really I don't believe that he was intent on that. Though he said " I had one kid that sat right here *pointing to a seat* that came in here farting in class." When he said that I was very prepared to chew his ass off with what I had to say. But then he explained that then after he learned that this kid had Aspergers and got to know him; became one of his favorite students. I told him after class that I have ASD and he was very polite and sensitive to it.

I really believe that he was using his own experience with the ADA involving disabled people and his job (obviously before he praised his past student he was coming off as insensitive). In no way do I suppot rotten attitudes towards disabled people, especially sense I am disabled with disabled members in my family; my Bigmama is in a wheelchair, my Great-Uncle had Asperger's Syndrome, and several more are mentally ill.

Maybe the poor guy had Irritable Bowel Syndrome? I have no proper data on this, but quite a few people here mentioned they have it.

I think he's in my Yoga Class, this just came to mind when typing my last response. Though the professor never described him by looks or name. The young man walked through me and another girl in my class while we were talking; he was farting as he walked through. Now he may not be him, but my ASD-dar (haha get it?) goes off when I'm around him or anyone that I get that vibe from.

Oh ok, it just sounded like a lead-in to obnoxious comments I've heard from people. Guess I misjudged him. The farting still seems a bit of weird thing for him to bring up, though.

Apple_in_my_eye I agree, it was weird of him, in general though he's a funny and weird guy. Aren't we all? Lol.
