I don't know if this is related to autism or not, but when I am not hungry, I can't force myself to eat. I just can't do it, no matter how good the food is. I don't know to many people like this. It's hard to explain, but it's like my body rejects the food before I put it in my mouth. Does anyone know what I mean?

I'm having similar problems lately, but they're unrelated to being autistic (as far as I know). For me, I know it's my emotional state that's causing me to have difficulty making myself eat.

Ah yeah, depressive cycles can make you have a very small appetite. I had the most tiniest appetite when on a high dose of stimulant medication. Even on my lousy half a pill I can have less of an appetite.

I usually eat when I need to and I don't really push myself after a meal.

I don't have depression though. It's not that I have a small appetite (I do, but not the extent of depression), it that's I can ONLY eat when I am hungry and I can't just eat anytime, I actually have to be at least a little bi hungry.

Yeah, it used to be I could not eat when I was not hungry, or, often I would only desire sweet or savory foods that were of terrible nutrition - candy, or fast food (that glutamic acid rich, addictive crap). I developed an academic interest in nutrition and wild edible plants, and since then eating is more adventurous. That made it easier. I do often keep compromises in the freezer. Amy's Organic frozen burritos I can eat anytime without much protest whenever I just don't feel like eating. There's only a few foods that aren't total junk, I can do that with.

I get like that when I'm depressed as well. The food looks good, but the appetite isn't there.

When you eat, is it in really small amounts and then you get hungry a few hours later? How are you feeling when you're trying to eat, but can't?

There are no feelings associated with the not eating.

However, I do find that when something is bothering me or I am anxious, I eat less.
