I vote "yes, because of another condition", because of my anxiety, self image issues and sleep problems. (I have OCD, BDD, MDD and non 24 hour sleep wake syndrome)

autism is really my most minor issue, I consider my BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder) far worse.

I don't consider myself mentally ill, but mentally inferior

because the poll options are fickle things that dislike being triffled with, the third option "Yes, because of another cindition" is not there, but please consider it a third option.

Autism isn't a mental illness in the general sense of the term "mental illness"; it's a developmental disability. An illness is something that starts sometime in your life; a developmental disability has always been with you. I would put autism in the same category as other neurological conditions, like mental retardation, ADHD, dyslexia, and other developmental oddities.

If you want to define "mental illness" as "a condition diagnosed and treated by psychologists", then by this broadest definition, autism counts; but that would mean you'd have to include things like ADHD.

I have paranoia, agoraphobia, and social anxiety as a result of a bad college experience that may or may not have been caused by my autistic symptoms (more likely the former though).

Do I consider myself mentally ill because of asperger's?
No, I totally reject the idea of AS/ASD being a mental health disorder, it may be classified as such but our minds are working as they should as AS/ASD minds and many of us will feel fine mentally - it's a neurological disorder, a difference in our brains not our brains gone wrong. Any related issues I have, such as anxiety, is a mental illness on it's own...it just so happens the way my asperger's brain works makes me more prone to anxiety, just as some NT's brains may make them more prone to anxiety too.

I do have mild OCD and body dimorphic disorder - but I don't consider myself mentally ill for these things. these things have been part of me for so long and they are so mild that I don't consider them an illness as much as a small quirk in my personality. I don't think I'm 100% healthy mentally, but that's not down to asperger's or any other underlying condition, it's simply a matter of circumstance effecting how I feel...which is something everyone gets from time to time.

but by myself; i do not see myself as being ill; i'm just different.
sure, i might have anxiety and a non-24 hour sleep cycle, but does that make me ill? i say not; if anything, it makes me a bit better; giving me the ability to pull all-nighters (if needed) without too much negative effects, and the anxiety keeps me safe in a lot of situations...

Definitely. I believe everyone has such imperfections. This wide ranging list on wikipedia leads me to believe that the most common form would be the delusion that one is completely sane. But I suppose that depends on the definition of mentally ill. If you notice something on the list you recognise in yourself, and think being mentally ill is a stigma that you would rather not carry, perhaps it is possible to form a group and lobby against your inclusion, as appears to have happened before. It would seem a bit narcissistic to me though, as I am quite mad.

I have been known to refer to myself as crazy because of my depression and anxiety issues. They can get really intense at times, and I know that my thoughts are not rational or logical when things reach that point.

Well I have AS, Depression, Anxiety, PTSD and some things that I have not attributed to those like paranoia and hitting/breaking things if I am angry or upset. So I think it is safe to say I am mentally ill.

And to specify I think AS is a mental disorder but not nessisarly an 'illness'....the Depression, Anxiety and PTSD are kinda both illnesses and disorders.

No I do not but I know I am considered it.

I don't have OCD.
I don't have ADHD.
I don't have body dysmorphic disorder.
I don't have schizophrenia.
I don't have issues with depression or anxiety.

I might have avoidant personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, alexithymia, and face blindness as comorbids to AS.

But does that make me mentally ill? Absolutely not. It fascinates me to think that I'm the one being called mentally ill when I'm the one who sees the world from a viewpoint with logic and reason.
