So I always thought I was weird that I would jump, yell, etc whenever I was startled. This could be a tap on the back I didn't expect, someone else shouting unexpectedly, a glass breaking that I didn't expect, a visual image appearing, such as looking up and seeing somebody I didn't expect, and I could go on and on. Basically, any unexpected stimulus causes me to reflex like a cat jumping in the air with fur high up. Is this typical or semi-typical in Aspies, or am I just weird?

I startle really easily too. My husbands friend decided to stamp on a drink carton the other day and thought it was hilarious when I nearly fell out of my chair when the noise made me jump. I tried to laugh it off with him but I think it came across as a bit forced which made him find it even funnier.

Inwardly I am startled, but I got sick of providing low cost amusement to bullies and practical jokers, so I have pretty much trained myself not to show emotion without thinking about it first.

I do have a startle reflex, although I tend to get angry rather than frightened.

Yes, even things that are relatively commonplace startle me.

I startle very easily but I don't really yell, I mostly just stumble backwards. But it's at the simplest things, like someone closing the door or the tree scratching on my window. Or people unexpectedly walking up behind me.

I also startle easily as well. It drove my mum crazy when I was younger. Very crazy.

I get upset when someone suddenly intrudes into my space, suddenly starts talking to me/saying my name, drops something, etc., but I don't usually startle at sounds that are commonly thought of as not being caused by people. It's peculiar.

Yes, for unexpected sounds (even if typical of environment, like train horns at the station, pictionary timer going off when i'm playing a game) and people sneaking up behind me. My theory is it's my intense zoning out, aspie focus. I can prepare myself for these things to some extent eg when the train is about to leave and it helps

Yes. I got made fun of for it a lot during high school, kids would always be coming up behind me and scaring me to see me jump. It worked just about every time. :?

When I worked at the machine shop my boss told everyone not to walk up behind me when I am working because they will startle me and I could have a heart attack or even worst ruin a part. People would walk up to me and talk to me without me knowing they were right next to me they would just appear out of thin air and scare the sh!t out of me.

I am very prone to being startled by the unexpected. exept I get mad and attack the person startling me...just a reflex.
