I've seen lots negative posts on WP about autism speaks and I was just wondering why people are so against them. I don't really know anything about it and only visited the website 5 mins ago for the first time and it seemed ok. What am I missing here?

Foe. They'd rather cure us and make us conform to their idea of a perfect person than help us be who we are and to do our best.

Or let us do our own thing.

They receive a great deal of money in the name of helping autism, but do bugger all to actually help our plight.... Instead they spend the money on wages, coke and hookers

So the problem people have with them is that they are looking for a cure? Which would probably involve messing with people's brain chemistry right? I can see a huge margin of error there. I think I'd rather keep my own unique brain than risk ending up like a vegetable.

Sorry it's just I didn't know anything about them :? I'm kinda new to these boards and live in the uk, and autism speaks seems to be an American thing. I was just wondering why people had a problem with them.

It could have been worse, I could have mentioned religion, now there's a messy debate with no finish line lol

People are against them because they claim to be researching for a possible cure (we don't want to be changed, although the severely lower-functioning might benefit not so they are completely NT, but just so they aren't so impaired) and really put more money towards paying their NT workers. Also. in 2008, Autism Speaks filed a lawsuit against an AS teenager for creating a parody site called NT speaks (it was dropped due to the sue-ee being a minor).

Also, here's an article of a person who made a shirt that spoke out against Autism Speaks and the aftereffects.

It's probably not a good idea to disclaimer every single discussion about a cure with "but low-functioning people should have one" or variations.

It's fine. I didn't mean to pick. Fresh users are always asking this question in one form or another. Nothing wrong with it, but it does get kind of tiring seeing it every time I come here.

It's no big deal. Stick around for a while. I bet you end up feeling the same way about this and a bunch of other questions and theories that keep cropping up.

You'll see!

BTW: My answer is: "Neither."

I've become indifferent on the topic. Autism Speaks has no influence over me.

Agreed. Autism Speaks really needs to be parodied.

In reality, the research they are funding is making it less likely there will ever be a prenatal test for Autism. No intention one way or the other, on their part, just the result of the research they are funding.

They helped fund the recent twins study that suggests that autism is determined more by environmental factors than it is caused by genetic factors, although both may play a part. This kind of research may eventually lead to avoidance of environmental factors that may, in some cases, lead to the more debilitating problems with Autism.

They fund the research, but the scientists do the research independently and the results aren't affected by politics. The previous twin study down in Europe suggested that Autism was almost entirely influenced by genetics; without the ability, now, to prove that Autism can occur soley without environmental influence, a prenatal test is much less likely.

The research itself, is neither friend or foe, it's just the scientific method, and scientific results. I try not to give it a personality.
