Are we considered INTELLIGENT because we have to be

Is it so that somebody with ASD functioning at a certain level and/or having education at a certain level has to be quite intelligent (In term of IQ) to compensate for the ASD (and ADHD and other issues).

Therefore people often think ASD people are intelligent because those they run into often are?

Also I guess those with Asperger are generally intelligent because they are the more intelligent of the ASD population?

AFAIK there is rather a slightly negative than positive correlation between having ASD and intelligence, also at higher levels?

I guess it's because we dedicate a lot of time to our interests, which tend to be intellectual in nature.

As people point out, the requirement that people have an IQ over 70 to be diagnosed with Aspergers tilts the bell curve in our favor.

That said, it seems like a lot of us have very uneven scores in IQ type evaluations. So the mean average can come out to be low while there is often a score or two that will fall in the gifted/genius range. That's just a personal theory though based of what I've seen.

It seems that aspies tend to be more in touch with (and have more strongly developed) reasoning functions (and disconnected from other functions), so they are often perceived as being 'intelligent'. But what's often meant by that use of the word is a narrow aspect of intelligence. Book smarts. Hence the 'professor' labels and what have you.

I think we have more space for thinking compared to nts. We usually spend less time socializing.

1.) I'm often in jobs that don't require a lot of intelligence therefore when people get to know me they are a little confused. In other words, if I functioned better in society, I may be surrounded by highly educated people who wouldn't think twice about my level of knowledge or my flowery verbosity.

2.) I love to learn. Life seems too sad and boring if I am not challenging and delighting myself with new information.

The stereotype of trains and computers makes us seem smart to most people (because what do most people actually know about AS?) Also, not being well adjusted socially certainly helps, because society breeds stupidity, and not being a part of that is a good thing.

Nobody considers me as intellegent. Most, if not, all the people I know consider me as stupid and slow. One or two people have even been taken by surprise when I said I can read and write and play the piano.

The dumbing down is easiest with NT's who are instinctually programmed to conform

You can even put them on a piece of string like a monkey, and make them jump through hoops!

Is there perhaps a positive "correlation" with VIQ?

So "we" are considered intelligent because we are in areas where VIQ is important.

I don't know, but I'm really not that intelligent, my IQ is something like 115-120, and I don't really think I'm that intelligent either, but people always seem to think I'm genius. People think I am super smart within 10 seconds of meeting me. Literally. 10 seconds. This seems to be the case with the special education assistants at my school especially. I think it's because they work with children who have intellectual disabilities mostly or something.

One special ed assistant get mad at me because we were talking about my schedule for school and I said that I had math in the morning. She said "I bet your good at math", and I'm not so I said "No, actually it's one of my worst subjects". She was very surprised and seem kind of annoyed for some reason.

I also don't like it when someone thinks I'm good at math just because I'm kind of smart in their opinion. Being smart doesn't necessarily mean being good at math.
