That people with autism are smarter then normal people. Does anyone else ever think this? There are lots of things that me, my AS friends, and my autistic dad would never do becuase we know way better. but then I hear about normal people how do it, and if a person with As or Autism can figer that out and a normal people can't, that is odd.

from what i understand thats a very controversial statement that people on the autistic spectrum have more intelligence, personally i think they have special talents Nts dont have and they are able to use them and take them to a much farther extent than Nts. but thats my opinion, ive heard stories of autsitic kids who are great at puzzles, can solve math quicker than any nt, can play the piano better than any nt, and even some who are supposedly strong psychics and can even communicate with spirits, but whos to say for sure i guess.

It's more of a balance act I've noticed. Our rote memory is mammoth. But think of what we lose socially to gain that? (Stereotypically of course.) The common nt can balance their knowledge where I'm stuck knowing about Neuropsychopharmacology but I don't have the skills to go further. I have to sit behind a screen and not a campus lecture.

I do think people with autism is porcentually more intelligent than NTs. I actually read somewhere high IQ is pretty common in people with AS. My husband and daughter both have AS and they are both pretty intelligent (I am not the only one saying that - people around them say the same thing), and both have pretty high IQs. And Temple Grandin is autistic and that woman is simply amazing.

I don't think that intelligence is a one-dimensional thing, with individuals' respective intelligences being high or low.

Intelligence seems very relative. As you do something you get better at doing it. Your brain develops more connections. As your brain develops it builds certain types of connections to specialize in solving problems in certain ways, and depending on how your brain learns to specialize you will be better at certain activities than at others.

Academically I'm considered by others to be intelligent. I taught myself how to read, could memorize long stories word-for-word, could learn language dynamics and science and mathematical concepts better than most people I've dealt with.

Socially although I may try to do what other people do, I usually do it incorrectly. And I often can't tell why others consider the way that I'm doing something to be wrong. I have gotten better at mimicking and sometimes can even act like others, but I lack understanding in that area, and generally lack the ability to use what little I do know. There is so much that I don't understand socially, and in that respect, no, I'm not very intelligent.

I agree that Intelligence is so multifaceted as to be impossible to really define or measure.
I only read my textbooks once and then spend the rest of my time watching films and playing games instead of studying the same material for hours. That may seem like I am intelligent, but put me in an area that I don't know and I get hopelessly lost or put with people I don't know and I don't know how to act anymore.

The way I see it is we are all equally intelligent overall, but the specifics of some people's intelligence is impossible for others to realize.

Well with all my intelligence I still cannot find any useful way to live my life.....uhh I guess there has to be a downside to everything.
