How do you "zone out"?
I read a post by someone once who said that he could retreat into his own world as a child.
I can't go as far as that,
but I often get submerged into my own thoughts,
with my sight focused unseeingly on a point.
I can't entirely drown out my surroundings (a disturbing noise will continue disturbing me while zoned out),
but for instance voices (if not too loud) will have no meaning (since I'm not concentrating on "decoding" the language).
Meanwhile I think about whatever's on my mind.

I use to "fantasize" alot about made up "events" revolving around areas of interest(ussually involving naughty things and boys)....now,I zone out more having imagined "practice" conversations about things that stres me....Talking to my psyc, parents or boss......I miss the good old days of zoning about boys(though it would be men now as I am old)

Sometimes the things I do are entirely mental... when I'm thinking about something, analyzing it. When my brain goes into "information processing" mode, my body doesn't really need to be doing anything, so usually it doesn't; or else I'm just stimming, usually twitching different muscles or rocking.

I also dissociate in this fashion when overstimulated, upset, in pain, or being attacked (verbally, nowadays) by anyone. Usually that sort of "zoning out" involves stepping back from my emotions, and analzying the situation rationally so that it doesn't have much emotional impact on me. The psychologists call it "intellectualization".

Oh, and when I'm being indecisive about something--when I'm not sure what to do next, when a project or physics/math problem has confused me or I don't know what needs to be done next in a task I'm doing (cleaning, etc.). That's when I kind of stand in the middle of nowhere, staring into space and trying to reorganize my thoughts so I know what comes next. It happens a lot when i'm doing schoolwork or tests, and can be improved by taking caffeine pills or drinking coffee. I really think I have non-hypreactive ADHD, or at the least my AS is mimicking ADHD...

I'm usually thinking about other things. Fantasies about me having a relationship with a guy, me having kids, being in a movie, marrying an aspie and having aspie kids or Nts. I also think about what I'm going to do when I get home and I think about moving a lot out of Montana. I also think about me in my childhood and what i used to be like.

I used to zone out allot when i was younger, but i learned not to do it in certain situations after i got into an accident going thru a red light without realizing it. Since then i'm usually hyper-vigelant when i'm driving and haven't gotten into an accident since than.

I can think of things as I'm driving luckily.

I often zone out. My dad use to say I was in a kind of a trance stuck in my own little world, but from my perspective it was my own big world. I could not help fantasizing about.

I daydream a lot. I have an extremely active imagination and lately I've been writing a book (VERY slowly) so my zoning often involves thoughts about it that I always say I will write down later, but most of it stays in my head and gets more and more developed, especially the characters. I create characters and then they live very intricate lives in my head. I imagine how they would react to certain situations and other characters and I play out scenes in my head. The ones I like are often replayed over and over and refined until I get the reactions "just right" which of course I never do.

I stim frequently when zoning. If I'm at a desk, I'll pick up a pen or pencil and flip it very accurately, often without realizing I'm doing it. If I get excited about something I dream up, I lightly slap both my knees very rapidly or I rub my hands together rapidly and excitedly. I picked up the pencil flipping from watching Johnny Carson and I picked up the hand rubbing from my mom.

Right there the reason why I'm not going to drive cars.

I zone out a lot.

I zone out alot, especially when i am stressed. I will go into my own world.I find it very hard to concentrate when alot
of things are going on around me.I will shut down or zone out when it comes to a certain point, or if something is boring me.

I zone out when I am deeply involved with a project sometimes to the point that someone else has to break me out of it usually by calling my name several time and louder each time till I realize that someone wants my attention

Well you have to consider that they said when they were a child. It's easy to retreat into your own world as a child, since you don't have many concerns about the outside world. Like, the news and stuff.

That describes my zoning out, though I don't usually get disturbed by noises if they start after I've zoned out.

Yes, I zone out.

Unfortunately, people want me to wake up to reality.
