i can cook for myself, do the lawn, shower by myself, go to the restroom by myself, clean the dishes and wash my clothes.

the problem is though when i am around other people my functional levels nose dive and i kinda freak out slightly. also shopping for food might be problematic becuase i don't like large crowds off people but i could always order my food online. Also holding down a job (esspecially one that earns good money) might be hard because of my functional levels.

have i got enough funcitonal problems too make independant living impossible?

I would label myself personaly as 'partly disabled' becuase i can function flawlessly when i am by myself.

It doesn't seem like it to me, going by this and what you've posted elsewhere, and it sounds like I have the same general problems with people and crowds as you do. Heh - along with most other members here, I guess.

A way of coping with the shopping issue is to use an mp3 player; others use that and dark glasses. Generally I'm Ok but I've planned in advance exactly what I need to get and the quickest routes to it so I spend the minimum amount of time necessary in supermarkets, but there have been times when I've used an mp3 player. It gives something to focus on and is a good distraction from all the mess going on around you.

Work is often a problem to some degree for anyone, AS or not, and it depends on what sort of work you end up doing.
As an obvious example - it wouldn't be a very good idea getting a job where you spend all your time dealing with people face-to-face if you have difficulties with that, so something else which doesn't involve strong 'people skills' would be better.
It's mostly 'an NT world' out there so some sort of interaction is inevitable. You cope; you make mistakes but you also find mechanisms to deal with things; you learn who to avoid and who is approachable.

If you're thinking of seeking some sort of government-funded assistance, you'll need to provide evidence that you have real problems with looking after yourself and a sound foundation for the cause of those problems.
I don't think "shopping for food might be problematic" and "holding down a job (...) might be hard" would get a very sympathetic hearing, TBH.

Well, there ya go!

It's difficult finding a good solution for the 'people thing'.
I've tried CBT and it was a complete waste of time. Medication takes the edge off the anxieties but doesn't really fix anything. Fumbling along and learning as I went has been the only truly practical system for me.

But you have a group of friends and you actually go out with them, so that's got to be useful.

Why was CBT a waste of time?

Didn't work: I over-analysed it and picked it apart instead.
