This is not a forum for NPD, so many of the responses you get may be somewhat off the cuff.

I have read that individuals with NPD have behavior that stems from a deep-rooted psychological belief they have that something is wrong with them. They tend to have had abusive parents. Most individuals with NPD grew up in a home where either or both of the parents were alcoholics.

I wanted to give you a good link that someone here once posted ...but I am a moron....daaahhh

That being acknowldged...you can find the article on Buzzle.com..under Health section...it is about people with AS being miss diagnosed with NPD...because they share some external "traits" but the internal reason for the traits are completely opposite.....I dont think I have ever met someone like this ,but the article says they can hide the Narcisim, and seem to make good con-artists if you have something they want(they sound like socio-paths...no sense of empathy or interest any anyone but themselves and their own needs..are all sociopaths...NPD?I worked with teens for 8 years and the worst were always the spoiled and not the abused kids..

Narcissists are not necessarily good looking and come in all shapes, sizes, and with different abilities. People can be narcissistic without having the actual narcissistic personality disorder listed in the DSM. The difference amounts to two completely different definitions of narcissism.

I think narcissistic personality disorder is probably caused by both nature and nurture.

One wants to kill those little bastards. And it's even worse that NPD's give aspies bad reputation.

From BBC's h2g2. It compares AS and NPD.

Morons. On the inside the two are absolutely diametrically opposites.

Some theories do believe that narcissism is caused by genetic factors.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissism ... etic_trait

In fact, there is a theory that believes that narcissism as well as aggression and perfectionism are the major driving forces in human personality and that all three tend to be genetic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPA_person ... Narcissism

Finally, there are theories that believe that narcissism is based more on nurture and that narcissists are really just compensating for some deeply felt problem.

Probably the biggest factor is environmental: parents spoiling their child materialistically while not being very close and loving emotionally. It teaches the kid a sense of entitlement (that others exist to serve his or her needs), a lack of empathy (doesn't care about anyone but themselves), and the idea that he or she is some fundamentally special or unique individual (the so-called grandiosity of narcissistic personality disorder). Usually in these families, emphasis is placed on competition, strategic advantages, and keeping up appearances. Some genetics may be involved as well, but my guess is that family and cultural environment really do more to trigger this disorder.

Some theorists suggest that, in other cases, narcissists are actually compensating for previous negative social experience by projecting a hypercompetent persona to cover up their internal feelings of low self-esteem.

The differences between Asperger's syndrome and narcissistic personality disorder are huge. Narcissists, according to the DSM-IV-TR criteria, are highly social and manipulative people, quite unlike most aspies.

This all describes my mother very well, who was diagnosed (years ago) with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

I'm Narcissistic as Hell, and not because I'm popular or good at sports or anything: I'm just really beautiful, amusing (unintentionally I assure you!), and imaginative. I have deep, expressive eyes, a handsome moustache, and a beautiful long mane of curly brown hair.
Anyone who doesn't also think I'm beautiful would have to be goddamned crazy.
