I'm wondering if there are other ways of Aspie thinking besides the famous visual thinking? I've got some proprioceptive thinking in addition to dominant visual. And a friend who might be Aspie says her thinking is dominated by verbal. Is that possible? Any other verbal thinkers here & is it specific to AS/autism?

I'm a serious verbal/idea thinker. I can think in wordless ideaforms a bit, but anything serious requires me to basically put together logical sentences. Understanding that relationship between words and thoughts is a major part of what makes me a skilled writer.

I think in concepts and relationships between concepts. The word for a concept is related to its concept as is the picture, at least for ones that have it, but they're not innately at the base level of thinking.

In order to communicate with words or with pictures I need to translate thoughts into the way that others use them.

That's me in a nutshell but every once in a while I will "see" in the literal sense the solution to a problem I am working on and struggling with.

As dominantly verbal thinkers, do you still lack the emotional "labeling" of the thinking?

I find that in my visual thinking, there is generally little emotional content, unless its one of those interpersonal disasters. Just a general sense of pleasure being engaged in thinking.

My thinking is very logical with emotion rarely playing much of a role.

NVLD, dominating verbal thinking, though I can visualize, but not on a constant basis. Basically everytime I wanna like, make a post on here, usually there's the equivalent of 10 paragraphs in my head per paragraph I wanna write, and I gotta condense it all.

I apologize for my ignorance... NVLD?

I smile... condensing is a problem for many of us, isn't it? :)

Pretty much. I actually had to stop and think about what you meant by emotional "labeling" of thinking. It's like a dictionary in my head. Some things have rough sketches, but they require much more effort to deal with than the words. None of it has much emotional content. I have to connect the reactions of my body to the thoughts and events happening at the time to keep up with any emotions that decide to do their thing.

I can fairly specifically describe the workings of my thought process in extended metaphor. My brain is like a container of reactive fog. Most thought is a process of that fog forming words. The words are easy and logical and sensible. It takes significantly more effort to force my brain fog to condense into images, just like it's easier to render/load text on a website than images. Therefore, my brain only really uses image based thought when a simple, unclear image can be used to take the place of a significant number of words in the thought flow. My dreams are even pretty unclear. I know a lot of things in word form in my dreams that never resolves itself visually in any way.

Sucks too. I have incredible vision. I've always wanted a photographic memory, just to use my eyes to their full potential.
