So what's the big deal about music?
I swear I am the only person that overall does not care for music. Sure, there's some songs I like and I'll listen to them until I get sick of them, but overall, if music suddenly disappeared, I wouldn't miss it. There are so many people out there (aspie or NT) that get so into it, but I just can't. Oddly enough, I've noticed that musicians always seem to love me lol So am I missing something here or what? I just think it's really overrated as well as the singers and bands. Come to think of it, I can't even think of a single band I've bothered to learn all the members of. Both of my parents love music as well and MTV and VH1 were constantly on our TV when I was little and music was always playing in the car so it's not like I've not been exposed to that much of it or anything. I'm hoping someone out there can relate to this or help me understand what I'm missing. It's been bugging me for years.
I have no interest in music either. Up until recently i never listened to any music. Now i just listen to a playlist a few songs which sound good. I very rarely listen to it though.
However i would miss music if it just disappeared though, Adverts and TV programs would be very boring without music.

This post makes me wanna cry...
For me, music is a form of communication that takes over where words either end or are ineffective. There is just too much beauty there to even fathom a world without music. And not that music has to be all about beauty all the time... There are just so many places music can take you, not all of them bright and happy, that human life would be empty without it. The complete story of humanity is in music.
Could it be your brain/ears are wired such that it's too easy to lose interest in mainstream music? If so, then you and I might have a lot in common. I'm a child of the 80s, so quirky synth-pop and heavy metal really get me going. I'm a vintage 80s synth enthusiast and just wish I had more money to spend on my toys. But more than that, I'm highly attracted to what used to be called avant-garde music. When I discovered the Beatles in jr. high, I enjoyed listening to all their cute early songs, but it was Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's, and the White Album that really fed me--heart, mind, and soul. I was bored with music theory in college until we got to 20th Century, and then I was WAY ahead of my classmates. And when I studied composition in grad school, I stayed as far back from mainstream music-making as I could, basically completely relearning the clarinet and heavily abusing the instrument to see what sounds I could wrench out of it. In the end, what I discovered was I was the one who was bending in new ways artistically, not all the cool tricks I learned how to do.
Now I'm spending a lot of time writing music for handbells, and my wife have become kinda like local stars in our church community because of what the two of us do with handbells. It's a wonderful creative outlet for me and allows me to be a little bit more myself than I get to be otherwise.
Since it's too difficult to get musicians together to perform the kind of music I REALLY want to do, I've resorted to making these kind of "sound sculptures" using my favorite electronic instrument: the Synclavier. And yeah, I'm just a little bit obsessive over it! When I was a little kid (back in the 80s) I was fascinated by the idea of space travel, astronomy, and that kind of thing. So now I'm combining two of my interests--space imaging (especially pics from the Hubble website) and atonal, arrhythmic, floating "space" music. What I've managed to do so far is a little too harsh even for my taste, but I think it's a good jumping-off point for more substantial work. I'm certainly getting more disciplined about it.
If it's possible you just can't get into too much commercialized music, check this out and tell me what you think--if you think it's horrible, then ok... But I'm very curious because I can't get into listening to commercial radio and I'm sick to death of classical music. About the only thing that interests me is music that has a message relevant to me and my life, like Contemporary Christian music, and more for the words than the music, and music that I create myself.

I love music. I would be really depressed if all music disappeared. I love the epicness of metal. And I love movie soundtracks, the soundtrack to The Lord of the Rings can get me crying, I'm not very emotional, but with music I can feel it and I understand what I'm feeling. Also, I always said I would never dance, that is until I discovered harsh EBM/aggrotech, industrial goth dance music a few years ago. I don't understand how someone can not like music, but hey, what I have come to understand is that not everyone thinks like I do, so don't worry about it.

Interesting...
I couldn't live without it. For me, it's always been about the only thing I can immerse myself in that makes sense.
Gotta have my music, and lot's of it.

As before when I first signed up here years ago, I'm finding that after a long hiatus, and after only a few days back on here, I'm spending way too much time here again already. So I'm requesting my account be locked, banned or whatever. It's just time. Until then, well, I dunno...
Only music I listen to these days is that oldie radio station in my car whenever I drive and that toddler music station on Comcast when I put it on for my kid or Titanic movie music on youtube.
I can't stand any music today. I have tried listening to the big kid radio station on Comcast and it wasn't my cup of tea. They play the same music that is hop hits today.
Music = noise.
I like some stuff, mainly upbeat songs for when I workout, but I don't have any emotional connection to it.
Bleh.

Music is the thing which instantly gives me focus and within a couple of bars there is only music.
The sound, feeling and sight of harmonies are emotions; the shifting layers and progression of the music becomes an enveloping and lifting structure given life and movement.
It grabs all of my attention like nothing else, and carries such meaning - far beyond and not requiring slow, clumsy and leaden words to obscure or clutter what's being said.

You see?
I just don't get it.
Music is just noise to me. I enjoy "happy" stuff, but, beyond that, I don't hear any difference between Mozart and Brittany Spears. A bunch of people bleating weird sounds. Give me a visual medium any day of the week. Besides, there's too much "math" in music, which sucks monkey butt.
Anyway, it's one of the reasons I was an outcast as a teen; I never knew any bands or music and I didn't care. A scene from 11th grade:
Kid: "So, do you like Pantera?"
Me: "What the hell is a "Pantera?"
Sigh.

Yesterday I was at the Autism Foundation again, and was on leave from work (they administered an IQ test to me, the WAIS-IV), and since I didn't work that day, I had a lot of free time, spending most of it with listening to music. Without that, I would have been very anxious, as the whole day was out of my routine, and there was no one to spend the time with.
There are different brain types within the ASD population. One possible classification that Temple Grandin uses is: 1. Photo realistic thinkers (her mind); 2. Pattern thinkers (math and music skills); 3. Verbal thinkers. So, not everyone has the same basic brain setup.
For me, music always played an important role in my life. There's an old tape recording clearly showing that before my 2nd birthday I could sing a simple song with the notes on the right pitch. But I was alway bad at lyrics, I forgot, repeat the same line, couldn't remember the right words etc.
Your video is awesome!
Well, I agree with you totally in that today's commercialized music isn't a good starting point to get to like music.
