Do Asian Countries even bother about ASD?

Even though I am a new member here, I realised that there are more posts relating to problems faced by us with ASD in the western countries. Hence I decided to start one on ASIAN COUNTRIES!! !

question: do you think that advanced or rapid developing asian countries did enough for people with ASD? If not, are there suggestions to improve?

i might be start a new thread on problems faced by ASD people in advanced or rapid developing Asian countries if this has enough responses =)

AFAIK Japan has the largest % of AS people, which can somewhat explain why looking people in the eyes there is an insult.

There are definitely efforts to help people with ASDs in Asian countries, but it really depends on the country. The different countries have very different cultures and are set up very differently. I've heard that in Japan there are a lot of people with AS; but they are dealing with mental illness and disability related stigma that seems to be somewhat worse than what we deal with in the US. In other places, North Korea and the rural parts of China for example, there isn't adequate medical care and people with ASDs don't get a lot of therapy, if any, and it all depends on how much the family can help them. Other places are highly advanced and the medical care is as good as it gets. I mean, Asia is an entire continent; how could you make a statement about all of it at once? That just doesn't make sense.

BTW, one of the reasons we aren't hearing much from Asia here on WP is probably the language barrier--English is pretty much required to participate on WP, and I don't think there are a lot of countries in Asia where it's the dominant language... the Philippines, maybe? More likely we would get people who learned it in school.

And they have taken unusually well to careers in technology and science, too, which is one place where an Aspie with a talent in that area can generally fit in pretty well... Living on islands, their gene pool has probably been isolated for a while; it's not unlikely that perhaps this particular ethinic group had a slightly increased autism rate. After all, many genetically-related groups of people have higher rates of one thing or another.

Apparently in South Korea it's so shameful to have autism in the family that kids often don't get diagnosed, or get diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder instead.

Oh, and it has an autism rate for Japan: 181 per 10,000, which is nearly double the 1:100 rate in the US. Interesting, but not conclusive: In many other areas, rates have increased similarly thanks to new diagnosis.
