Just thought I'd update this situation about communicating with doctors for those who are interested in seeking a professional diagnosis. I was convinced the GP would not refer me ( in a previous post I complained about the doctor having a poor knowledge of autistic spectrum disorders), he is still sceptical but has referred me. I was not grilled this time and he actually listened a bit, so its worth a try if anyone else is considering it.

That's great - congratulations on passing that hurdle. I'm curious - which kind of expert did he refer you to?

Hello, can you tell us exactly how you went about asking this? Thank you.

Are you in the UK? In the US, you don't need a GP to refer you to a psychologist. You can just go to one on your own.

(Just wanted to state that in case other people in the US think that they can't go to the psychologist without the GPs permission.)

There is an Aspergers diagnostic centre in Cambridge, UK called CLASS, the GP referred me there. It was quite a task describing my difficulties I wrote some of them down beforehand to put across a coherent message, I have a long history of anxiety and depression so this is why the GP was sceptical, he believes the root of the problem is psychological rather than neuro developmental but has agreed to refer me.

re US & UK referrals - you don't need a referral to a psychologist, but i think you need a referral to psychiatrist?

Not in the US. Though you might if you have some sort of super-crappy insurance plan.
