so if the DSM changes go ahead in america will that mean that people Dx'd with it(DSM) outside of the US will have autism spectrum disorder? here in australia the ICD-10 is used as well as the DSM so does that mean a bunch of people Dx'd will have autism spectrum disorder as opposed to kanners, asperger disorder, pdd-nos and a bunch of other people in the same country will still have classic autism, asperger syndrome and pdd-nos? or will everyone still have aspergers, kanners, pdd-nos except for in america? and does that mean if you travel you will be considered as having something else?

Since it is a manual published by the "American Psychiatric Association" I think it is safe to say it doesn't affect many people outside of the US and even there it's future looks uncertain.

http://www.apa.org/monitor/2009/10/icd-dsm.aspx

Quote:
Will the DSM be superseded by the ICD? There is little justification for maintaining the DSM as a separate diagnostic system from the ICD in the long run, particularly given the U.S. government's substantial engagement with WHO in the area of classification systems. But, said Reed, "there would still be a role for the DSM, because it contains a lot of additional information that will never be part of the ICD. In the future, it may be viewed as an important textbook of psychiatric diagnosis rather than as the diagnostic 'Bible.'"

I guess the rest of the world will follow DSM sooner or later, and that implies changes in the ICD.

However, eliminating PDD-NOS will be a major joy to me, I hate that this dx was given to me in Central Europe, while it seems that oversees AS is more frequently given (or a former dx of PDD-NOS is often changed to AS later), supporting the impression that HFA = AS.

Any NOS dx should be eliminated if possible, IMHO.

Why would that be so? The USA is not the alpha and the omega.

As far as I know, the ICD generally tends to follow some of the DSM's changes. However, the ICD already includes diagnoses that the DSM does not and vice versa. More so, some of the diagnostic guidelines, descriptions of disorders and the official terms used for disorders differ as well. It's pretty much a "perhaps, perhaps not" kind of situation.

The ICD is doing a new one too- number 11 should come out 2014 I think.
They are trying more to align them, though as far as I know they aren't changing different types of ASD in the ICD.

It is probably inevitable that if DSM changes to just autism, then eventually ICD will too because they are both compiled by an international team.

As far as I can see the DSM is compiled entirely by Americans and Canadians. Bit of a stretch to call it international.

Like it or not, its influence is.
