An isolated single room?

I was telling someone how much I'd like to live somewhere that isn't attached to another building (detached, I think they're called?) so people wouldn't wake me up EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY CLOSE A DOOR.

Okay, anyway, he said that a detached house would be expensive, and it naturally occurred to me... why 'house'?! Why does everyone think in that manner, seriously? One person doesn't need a whole house... I don't even use half of my flat, as... surprise surprise, I can only be in one room at a time, and I don't see the point of changing it often. Heck, it'd be much more convenient if I had a toilet in front of my computer... imagine that!

But really, do these things not exist? There's a whole industry dedicated to building stuff that brought down most economies, and they're this inflexible? (To be honest I have close to no knowledge about any of this, so I'm not exactly justified in complaining *right now*.)

All I want is to not be bothered and be left alone in some room that doesn't at all have to be huge. Some people have detached palaces that they get lost in... could I not possibly find one lone place where everything doesn't vie to intrude upon my psyche? All I want to be able to do is read in peace, really.

This might be what you need

I think a trailer would be the perfect solution. They come in all sizes from very small to really spacious, you can find quite cheap used ones and you're flexible. If you don't like it at one place any longer, rent a towing vehicle and move.

Get a studio. It's a home where everything is in one room, expect the bathroom, that's normally a separate room for privacy.

I like the ideas of a trailer or a studio. I currently live in a dorm, and have a room to myself. It's great, and I wouldn't trade it for anything, but it can be kind of a nuisance when the other girls on the floor talk/argue too loud, keep slamming doors, or invite boys in.

I saw an article about tiny houses (one room) in Mother Earth News recently, but I can't find it now. I thought it seemed pretty cool and if I was single I'd live like that.

I read about some 'creative' housing arrangements people had come up with. One person decided to purchase and live in a shipping container.

Tiny Houses are expensive but cool.

A trailer is a good idea, but cheapest of all would be to get a van conversion, take out the seats, put in what you need, get a small generator for electricity, etc. A lot of people have websites about living in their vans, but they're sort of living on the road. This is what I'm planning to do. I lived in my car for a few months, so it'll be a piece of cake.

@starkid - I spent many moons sleeping in my car. I think I'm too old for that now, but, it was an experience.

I've wanted a Tiny House for years! I was actually hoping to buy land for one, but then I found a townhouse that was much more affordable.
