I would like to ask people here.

Do you think it is because of AS that I can't stand music etc from the radio, TV and so on when I am not watching or listening to it? I actually had a conflict with a colleague at work about it. My work involves working in multiple rooms for different tasks. One of the rooms has a radio there and often people have it on too loudly for me. I really find it overwhelming. Most people seem to be fine though some say the radio is annoying. I feel I shouldn't have to work with such unnecessary physical discomfort. As a result, I just avoid doing those tasks that are to be done in that room. I am yet to be diagnosed, but I have several AS traits and am intending to see professionals about it. I really need to resolve this issue at work. In addition to my poor interpersonal skills, this radio issue is making things very bad at work. I genuinely feel stressed to think about going into that room.

Please give your opinions if you have any.

I have this problem a lot in the car. I generally like to keep the radio on so that I don't have to make conversation with people, but they often turn it up too loud and then it just becomes painful. I really hate having to carry on a conversation over music, partly since my voice is very soft and I have to shout, and partly because I can't focus on what people are saying with too much audible distraction going on.

First of all, talk is processed differently in the brain than music, which is why I can tolerate having most music up louder than anything that talks.

Secondly, most of the doo-dah they put on radio these days (assuming it's pop music from these days), is mastered and mixed so horribly because not only do their soundwaves look like clipped flat sausages, they also compress the hell out of it. Which is unpleasing to the ears, and especially on a cheap radio.

Unless I'm really listening to some music, usually with headphones, I hate being tortured with it. At work I wear earplugs anyway, but it's a torture in some stores and public places like parks, if people need to have their radios on like they were alone. However, I'm overly sensitive to noises anyway, especially screaming and shouting of high pitched voices like most women and all children have, that sounds like a jet engine to me and instantly causes a stress reaction.

I have the same problems with TV and radio noise. I'm unable to block it from my head or stop it grabbing my attention or stop it drowning out my thoughts. It makes it very difficult to concentrate on whatever tasks I'm trying to do. I'm one of those rare individuals who rarely listens to any music anyway and could live quite happily if music didn't exist. That said I do like classical music: Mozart and Beethoven for example. The radio / cassette player in the car hasn't been turned on for several years. Silence is golden.

My mother has this problem and she is NT. Anything is too loud for her like the TV but yet if she is the one watching it, no problem. I have the problem with car radios. I don't like it blaring so I turn it down. My husband likes it louder but when I talk, I have to turn the music down. I just don't like to feel I am shouting over it. My mom is the same way about music in the car.

I had the same problem at work with colleagues playing radio all day. I found it very hard to concentrate on what I was supposed to be doing, especially as my job involves listening. The noise of the office and the radio as well as phones was a nightmare and for 6 months we also had demolition work outside! It got to the point where I found it hard to sleep, with lyrics and songs constantly going through my head, and it was music I hated. At one point I seriously considered taking a screwdriver to it or smashing it up when nobody was around! I mostly listen to chilled, downtempo music, but I don't mind loud or agressive music like metal or drum and bass as long as it is good. Chart music on the other hand is just shrill and annoying with 4 note melodies repeating over and over that make me feel really angry.

Well we nearly had a fire in one of the offices and after that the managers wanted to know every electrical item in each office, that's when they said we weren't really supposed to have radios. But nobody took much notice. Finally I found a notice on the intranet saying that radios were not allowed as they wouldn't pay for licencing, I showed that to the manager and told them it was distracting me and she was very understanding and now there are no radios! Perhaps you should look up if there is a policy at your workplace regarding radios and show it to your boss and let them decide, in the UK you have to have a licence now for playing music (a big brother policy to be sure - don't know if the US has this?) but you could look into whether your workplace has paid for one and if not casually mention it to your boss, and as there could be fines they will be sure to take action. I would try to avoid direct conflict as some people get really annoyed if they cannot listen to their awful music, yet they impose it on others without a second thought.

In the U.S. it's possible there is a workplace policy, but there is no license for playing a radio, even in the workplace. Generally, the deciding factor is if it interferes with work. An employer will take care of it if it does. In some cases the disability act can come into play.

I don't like listening to the radio because they play rubbish music and also the ads interrupts which means i find it difficult to follow it.

I don't listen to radio because I don't like most of the "mainstream" music.

But yeah I'm sensitive to sound. Sometimes when I was in the car with friends they turned up the music so loud I thought my brain was going to explode. Nobody else seemed to mind though.

Also I really hate TV noise. I don't watch TV myself, but the girl living next to me is watching TV almost all day and I find it really hard to concentrate on anything when there's distorted noise in the background. Obviously I can't command her to stop watching TV (sadly)...

i find noise to be an issue only on poorly received stations, especially AM radio at night.

Radios give me headaches. Fairly universally.

I hate it when the neighbours put their music on loud. I can't block it out and I can't concentrate on anything else.
I can put my own music on to drown it out, but I work much less effectively with a noisy background.
I like to work in silence.
At my last job someone wanted to bring a radio to play music while they worked and ignored my objections until one of the senior staff backed me up.

The radio can be to much if put on to loudly all because of the possible low quality of the sound but one thing I can't stand and just CAN'T stand to hear on a radio is sports commentators and my bf being a big sports fanatic listens to them a lot. They make my ears want to bleed. For one they all seem to sound the same and two their voices seem to lack bass or something to deepen them so they end up sounding kind of sharp and high pitched and it's just like a knife point being jabbed into my ears.

Any music on the radio is bad to me, but some genres more painful than others. Rap is the worst with its bass notes that travel so far and aren't blocked by earplugs. What I can't understand is how anyone can turn up the volume way loud on a station that has a lot of static. I've noticed this a lot in my life, people listening to the radio when the reception is bad or on a cheap radio where you hear hiss as much or more than music or talk. WHY???

Ha don't live in the ghetto then. Though usually you find these show stoppers with CD players or these days they are able to plug in their Ipods/mp3 players so a clear sound is produced. Still you wonder how it doesn't kill their ears.
