I thought I had heard it all until I saw this recent documentary which claims austim is caused by toxins released by stomach bacteria affecting the brain. Its a long watch, with commercials imbedded it it, but it made me wonder- is this really possible??

A link to the full video:

http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/episod ... nigma.html

That by killing the toxin producing stomach bacteria and replacing them with 'healthy' bacteria the symptoms of autism go into remission. If it is even partially true, I would probally like to try something like this myself, I've suffered with Aspergers for so long...

Autism is not caused by brain damage or poisoning. Some cases of Savantism might be, but thats different.

I watched it and I thought it was a good theory for a specific type of autism which they mention. That being the regression kind where a child develops normally than suddenly regresses.

That sounds like it technically isn't autism, it sounds like the non-autistic PDD whose name I forgot. The other two are fragile-X and Rett Syndrome.

I'd like to see more double-blind studies and peer-group review before coming to a conclusion.

I might of been unclear, but I am referring to the more Classic Autism. In a lot of cases the child develops normally until 18 months and then suddenly they regress into autism. The kind where vaccines was blamed as the trigger for by some until recently.

Ridiculous. Autism is caused by listening to Boston's "More Than a Feeling" backwards.

That's Rett syndrome. They develop pretty normally; but then they stop developing and start losing skills, as well as having motor skill problems and seizures/neurological issues. Heller syndrome is similar, but more rare. Rett syndrome has a known genetic cause--the MECP2 gene--but Heller syndrome is still unknown.

In "Classic autism" (which is just called "autistic disorder"), development is atypical from the beginning, though it may not be noticed until the kid is old enough that he starts missing milestones. That's what you may be referring to as "regression": Since what autism affects are things we don't expect of children until they are two to four years old, it looks as though they develop normally to begin with but then start to fall behind. But when you look at home videos of autistic children taken before they were that age, you see atypical behavior as early as the first few months--less eye contact or unusually intense stares, different interaction with the environment and with people, unusually cranky or calm babies. It's just harder to see when the child isn't yet expected to be giggling and playing Patty-Cake with Mom yet.

I doubt this is the answer but I see how people might get there - people on the spectrum do tend to have a much higher prevalence of GI problems

What can you find out about the researchers whose work this is based on, any agendas?
What is the nature of the links to those who have a more financial, and less scientific interest?

How do you know that this is the work of anti-vaccination people?

a lot of those warrior moms say that their kids got gi issues after the vaccine as well as autism and they suspect that it caused it.
