What? We are now the same as autism or what?
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nati ... l/1739301/
Sorry, I was reading this page about "Eliminated the term Asperger's Syndrome" and I find myself not really understanding it, despite it's in English.
I think it says we are now the same as (classical) Autistic people and they want to drop the usage of "Asperger's Syndrome"?
Previously on a Taiwanese website, the translation said that the decision on 1st December, 2012 from USA was about cancelling the term Asperger's, and grouping us into the Autism group, for ease of diagnosis and therapy.
That kind of made me angry a little because most "therapy" was about learning to talk, right? But we Aspies surely don't have speech delay.
I'm kind of annoyed that they think that we are all the same.
However, I don't think the English version was saying what the Taiwanese version said, I think there was a translation error.
I think the English version said, "Alike Autism, AS is no longer a mental disorder", which was what Wrong Planet was fighting for, right?
Anyone know what's going on?
Thanks?

It will not be the same as "classical autism" as autism is a spectrum, but I guess some will be classed as "high functioning autism" and some will have the new "social communication disorder". I'm curious to how it will happen, and if everyone will have to be tested again or if they'll just switch it. I'll make some calls to see what will happen with mine, anyway.
The changes in diagnostic criteria are probably going to cause the most problems for older, fully verbal children who have normal intelligence and are diagnosed in late childhood or adolescence. I have observed many individuals who have had a diagnosis that switches back and forth between ADHD and Aspergers. Another problem is that some individuals may get a diagnosis that will hold back their progress such as conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder.
Asperger always was a form of autism.
Its nothing else like the term "visually impaired": You can be nearsighted, you can be farsighted, you can be colourblind, you can have a glaucoma.... All people suffering under any kind of limited sight are visually impaired. That doesnt mean that being nearsighted, is the same as having a glaucoma.
The problem with the earlier terms, was that all forms represented a form of autism, but many of the effected people were floating with their symptoms between this terms. So formally many aspects of the earlier known HFA would fit much better to me, then the ones from Asperger. But for HFA definition there had to be heavy speech delays under the age of 3. So I got the more flexible Asperger diagnosis. I am also online in a forum for all kind of autism, and gotta say, that many times its much easier for me to talk to people there, because many Aspergers still seem to much NT for me.
Its the same with you, so you say: "But we Aspies surely don't have speech delay." Most Aspies have... not critical one as a must have, but there are only few aspies who really dont have any speech delays at all. So in this example you would be the one outstanding.
So when there is nothing 100% exact criteria to separate the different autism forms, why insist of having something you cannot separate anyway.

Exactly. Actually, the psychiatrists that diagnosed me must have thought I was too severe for an Asperger's diagnosis as I got to choose between Asperger's and HFA. The thing that stopped me from HFA was that I didn't have a significant speech delay, which I was told was basically the biggest difference (I didn't have as much information about it as I do now). Should have gone with HFA in retrospect and in light of these changes. They also wanted to run more tests for ADHD but I declined it. Whyyyyyyyyyyyy
ETA: I also mostly get along better with those that identify as on the spectrum. There are probably many that actually have Social communication disorder.

First of all, don't be sorry. In May 2013 the DSM 5 is going to be official for those who use the DSM. Aspergers and PDD-NOS will be eliminated. There will be a change in criteria for autism and the thinking is that people who have a DX of AS or PDD-NOS will be folded into autism the next time they get an evaluation. Those lacking stereotyped and repetitive behavior will likely be put into social communication disorder. Those put into autism will have a severity level from 1-3. The debate about the change on WP centers mostly around whether people who currently have a DX of AS or PDD-NOS will be excluded from autism.
This is the condensed version. You can use the search feature on WP to find more, there have been many threads about the DSM 5.
They are also dropping classic autism I believe and making it all autism spectrum disorder. AS has always been a autism and so has PDD-NOS and they are making it all autism spectrum disorder. They are also getting rid of Rett's Syndrome and Childhood disintegrative disorder.

Ya, what she said ^
What was interesting was that both PDD-NOD and Aspergers both had the same diagnostic code (299.80) in the DSM-IV-TR
It seems highly unusual that they would give two different diagnosis' the same diagnostic code to begin with.
Yet once i heard that they were getting rid of both Aspergers and PDD-NOS i was like hmmm and wondered if they were given the same
code by those who knew they were only going to rid of them to begin with?
It really makes no sense to give the same number to 2 different diagnoses
While they are dropping the term Aspergers, people will have to be re-evaluated and either would be in HFA of the Autism spectrum, or they would go into the social communication disorder new category. Ifs possible some may be left with no diagnosis at all if they are high enough functioning

People with aspergers already are autistic...but they aren't exactly saying people with aspergers are low functioning autistics though considering that they are the same disorders there actually is a lot of simularity. Anyways the, way I understand it it's a spectrum with the low functioning and high functioning end...I'd imagine most with aspergers would be between moderate and high functioning or something like that. I think it makes more sense since its the same disorder and it would make more sense than having autism and aspergers as seperate diagnoses.

"Despite this brief resurgence of interest in his work in the 1990s, AS remains a controversial and contentious diagnosis due to its unclear relationship to the autism spectrum."
"The World Health Organization's ICD describes AS as "a disorder of uncertain nosological validity",[12] and there is majority consensus to phase the diagnosis out of the American Psychiatric Association's diagnosis manual.[13]"
For Aspergers "study" only he observed conditions in 4 boys??? Why not do a more detailed study after that? If he did, where is a link to the study using more individuals if there is one?
They coined Aspergers knowingly that they were planning on doing away with the term. It doesn't make sense why they would have used Aspergers at all. Why not just put those into HFA?
Why make a temporary condition knowing it would be rid of?
As term for classification in between more research being worked on?
Aspergers' subjects really seem to be high functioning as is mentioned by the normal or above normal intelligence.
It sounds like the study was messed up since the subjects were all from the same area possibly same schooling or upbringing, which would explain why they all had above or average IQs.
His study should have been more diverse. Also he had noted the condition in himself, as a child. His upbringing on an isolated farm could have led to problems with social skills. (possible environmental autism, yet not severe)
He may have had too personal a stake in his own theory, i would have called in other doctors to help with a balanced study

If you're upset about that you don't want to know what Asperger's syndromes original name was.
So they are doing away with Rett's Syndrome? But isn't there like a HUGE difference in abilities between someone that was once classified as Aspie and someone diagnosed as Rett's. I get that they are both on the Spectrum. But it just seems that's not really fair to anyone to classify them all alike.
As for aspie/Autistm, that I get. HFA and Autism and Aspergers are very similar. And I think it will "legitimize" Asperger's for those that insist that "it's not really a problem" or "you cope well enough"

No, most therapy is about learning social skills.
Speech delayed autistics do get speech therapy, but they also get therapy for training social skills. (I've volunteered with such therapy - you can develop social skills even in a child who has no speech at all.) Also, they get taught practical skills like dressing yourself and such.
Usually higher functioning autistic or AS people get the social skills part alone, or maybe some help with practical skills.
Anyone who works with autistics knows each one is unique, and needs their own program designed for their specific needs. Lumping AS in with autism won't change a thing.
He wrote plenty more, it's just that no one's translated it out of German.

They are not doing away with Rett Syndrome. They are saying Rett Syndrome is a medical condition, and should be diagnosed by medical doctors, not psychologists. It would be like if the DSM had criteria for Fragile X Syndrome. Both Rett and Fragile X Syndrome are supposed to be diagnosed based on genetic testing, not observation of behavior. It really isn't a psychologist's job to diagnose medical syndromes, even if they affect behavior. A psychologist who thinks a child has Rett Syndrome should be referring them to a geneticist.

Ummmmmm....the regime that was in power at the time....did'nt want to hear about disabilities. Making sure he used a high-IQ sample and did'nt have anyone else in on the study was probably the best thing possible at the time, if that's actually what he did.
