Quit posting preliminary theories about new drugs. I've already tried most of the ones y'all have posted about before. One of these days, this pattern may kill me.

Oh, yes ... just not FDA-approved drugs. Anything else ... I'd at least try once. haha

This one sounds rather dangerous though, and I'm not a fan of needles. I wonder if there's a natural, safer alternative, like there is for most medications, should this prove successful in humans.

In other news: Scientists from Belgium made a interstellar warpdrive by connecting a blender to a midi keyboard while playing "The Blue Danube"

*sigh* There is SOOO much BS when it comes to news containing the words "Autism" and "Cure" and there are lots of greedy people trying to make a buck by selling "medicine" to gullible autistics. There is no cure for autism there will never be any. Sorry for breaking your hopes, but the sooner one learns to deal with reality and starts overcoming ones limitations, the better.

^ but what if there are treatments that help? Why not be open to trying different things & see if they benefit you?

Even if there is no complete cure, a lot of things have been proven to make the lives of autistic people much better. For me, Vitamin D/Magnesium supplementation really helped. I'm not cured, and my life still sucks, but I'm a lot better than I was just a few months ago and *gasp* probably less autistic too. I've tried a variety of other things, too, but none have worked as well (yet).

It's a lot like AIDS. There is no (mainstream) cure. Yet there are a lot of things one can do to manage the disease very well. I know someone who has lived with HIV for nearly 12 years and is still quite healthy. He can live a normal life. I bet it could be the same with autism where a variety of treatments could help autistic people function as NT. Managing it would come first. Then, maybe after a few decades, would come a cure that would obviate the need for supplements, therapy, and drugs.

Remember when people said AIDS was "incurable" because it was God's curse? Gradually, medical technology improved the prospects for people so that it was no longer a death sentence. Now, it's highly manageable, and we are on the verge of being able to cure it completely. Autism is just 20-30 years behind.

Acceptance is the cure.

So, let's just accept bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, Downs Syndrome, Sociopathic Personality Disorder, ADHD, and Borderline Personality Disorder. No need to treat any of these. If autism is just a "difference," why not apply the same thing to all other mental disorders? Just open the asylums and let everyone run wild. If the world has to accept untreated autistic people, then it should have to accept untreated schizophrenics too. lol

Ok, you say it may not be fair to compare ASD to psychiatric disorders. I disagree, actually. I think the symptoms of Asperger's are often very similar to and very hard to distinguish from several psychiatric disorders such that I fail to see a useful difference. But in any case ...

My answer is that ADHD is an apt comparison. If autism is just a difference, not a disorder, it would be very hard to argue that ADHD is a disorder, not a difference, even if you did this with schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions. Yet most people with ADHD are happy to treat it with drugs and therapy and manage the symptoms. What if the equivalent of aderall were developed for ASD? I doubt this would constitute a "cure" or be the end of the world.

Only if acceptance leads to learning about yourself & AS and how to treat and manage it successfully in way that brings you balance.

There are numerous treatment options. Some work better for some than others. It's all about finding the right combination of things to make you whole, balanced, and able to function better in life and society vs. the self defeating behaviour of simply accepting whatever level functioning you're at as permanent and untreatable.

suramin is interesting. thanks, OP. i'll be watching for more info as the trials proceed. if it works, it might be worth getting an official diagnosis to qualify to get a prescription. too early to tell, though.

I quit reading not even half way in. Many things just raises my hackles.

Quoted: "Autism is a wide ranging condition, mostly seen in boys, that affects a person's ability to socialise and communicate and can have a devastating lifelong impact."

I beg to differ. Girls mask more effectively than boys and have more socially accepted "special interests" - like dolls or reading the same novel 200 times. Therefore less diagnosis are made for girls.

They want to say changes in genetically modified mice is proof of finding a cure? Are WE genetically modified???? I wouldn't let them touch my children - the best thing I ever did with my life with a ten foot pole because of evidence found in genetically altered mice!

Naw.. I needn't read more than that. As much as my life sucks and I have more issues than I can shake a stick at.... using myself as a lab rat for a maybe... just isn't going to happen. what happens if they discover it actually worsens autism - as so many "safe" things have done?

Just look at tylenol - the ONE SAFE painkiller to take in pregnancy has now been proven to cause autism or autism symptoms - or to worsen autistic traits in the already autistic. Link to article here

Enough said.

To be fair, autism as a whole is more prevalent in boys. It's only high-functioning autism that is underdiagnosed in girls.

Also, this isn't a cure. It's a mild drug that's been around since 1916. At least wait till the end of the trial before jumping to conclusions. It likely has fewer side effects than many FDA approved drugs, like Zoloft.

Cure - or not a cure... again... even just "to ease symptoms".. waiting til the end of a trial... How long has Tylenol been said to be safe? Oh my.. more years than I can count and at least 14 - as that is how old my oldest child is.. Absolutely not.

I admit my talking about the prevalence I was talking Aspergers.. not Autism as a whole.. my bad for black and white thinking... but my opinion on this drug trial remains firm. I don't need to read the entire article to know how I feel about what they are saying. Anything to do with genetically modified mice as proof is enough to send me running. My right to feel that way. Also my right to speak my opinions, just as you speak yours.

I am against most modern medicine. Way too many "safe" drugs have almost killed me.. Way too many safe drugs have many years later come back to be known to cause needless deaths or brain injury. That is enough proof for me (edit here) to not "At least wait till the end of the trial before jumping to conclusions"

Are these mice Autistic then?

I have an issue with "cure" - what exactly does this cure remove? A friend posted something on Twitter and I said that if you cure Autism, (as a whole and not just the areas that are a problem) you also remove parts of someones personality. She replied and agreed. She said that her children (they also have Fragile X Syndrome) do need help to flourish; but she doesn't want to change their personality.
