I'm starting a facebook page to bring Temple Grandin to speak in my home city. Please like, especially if you live in Northern Ireland.

Thanks.

She already went to Dublin last month! I had to miss her cause of work! :(

Instead of bringing her to speak in Belfast, bring her to speak at Autscape, in West Yorkshire, where Autistics from all over Europe gather every summer:

Ask your fellow Belfastian rarepegs about Autscape:

He comes to Autscape every summer, so he can tell you a lot about it.

Its anglocentricity like this that means we often miss out on things like this. Not everyone from here is lucky enough to be able to afford flights, hotels etc.

You can practically swim from Belfast to Britain.
Having traveled, by sea, from Wales to Eire and back, I know this.
You can bring a tent and camp at Autscape, so neither flights nor hotels are needed.

'Practically swim', there's an exaggeration if I ever heard one. The real killer isn't necessarily the distance, its the necessary mode of transport and accommodation expenses. Going to somewhere like Dublin or Londonderry I wouldn't mind so much because I can go there and be back the same day. Somewhere like Glasgow or Yorkshire on the other hand, well thats a different matter.

Last time I went to London for a weekend with my wife, we spent in the region of £600 including flights, bed and breakfast and eating expenses. We weren't extravagant either (we stayed at Travel lodge).

Its not an expense I decide to make lightly.

Sleeping under canvass isn't practical with people with families. Especially those like mine with small children.

Aside from cost implications, the other thing is that Northern Ireland is years behind mainland UK in terms of Autism Advocacy. We need someone of her authority to spread the message here.

OK, then speak to you fellow Belfastian rarepegs: http://www.wrongplanet.net/forums-profi ... 22493.html
He may want to help you to get things started in Northern Ireland.
