Hey everyone, new here. I have a question. I was diagnosed with aspergers when I was around 12 or so. I'm 19 now. The problem is I dont really believe I have it and I want to join the military and they won't let me join because of it. The doctor who saw me only met me one time. He also met me at a time when my younger brother and sister were diagnosed with autism. I truly believe my mom was so distressed at the time about my younger brother and sister that she was seeing autistic traits everywhere. This same doctor went on to diagnose 3 of my other siblings as well, one of which was only 2 years old. We have a large family. I agree with the 2 who were diagnosed with autism but 6 of the 7 could not have this disorder could they? The last one the doctor refused to see for the disorder. Now being diagnosed is keeping me from my dream. Is there any way to overturn a diagnosis? Would the military accept a second opinion? Even my mom says now she thinks I was diagnosed incorrectly and regrets getting any of us diagnosed except the two obvious ones.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Yes, they could. There is a large heredity component, approximately 50 percent of the variance being accounted for by genetics. And having multiple family members diagnosed probably does increase the chance of any additional family members being diagnosed.

Sorry about the dream, but I suggest you find another dream. There are lots of potential dreams out there.

I was in the military from 2002-2007. Wasn't diagnosed then, so that worked in my favor. You could try asking for a waiver.

And in regard to family. I have 5 kids, 3 boys and two girls. My oldest may have SPD but is very social. Middle boy was diagnosed ASD level 1/ADHD/multiple severe learning disabilities. My youngest boy is waiting for his test next month for aspergers and IED.

My two girls, I'm watching over right now, my oldest girl (who is 4) struggles with sarcasm and jokes and seems to be rejected by NT kids her age.

My wife was diagnosed with ADHD as a kid so it may end up being the baby of the family (she is 2) will be only NT person in the whole household, lol.
