government help for being a burden
is there a way i can get money and or health insurance from the government?
i'm useless and can't do or stick to anything. even a tiny amount of stress and i'll shut down for
weeks without talking to anyone. i'm not anti social or have social hangups, but its like all the thoughts get stuck in my head, and i feel like my body is a puppet and my brain just controlls it.
i wish there was a way to get money to give to my parents to help out.
i'm in michigan by the way
i'd prefer to have never been born but thats not an option, but dont worry, the other way out is also not an option because i dont want to cause my parents any more burden

dont apply for SSDI unless you can meet the SSA's definition of a disabilty. wich is EXTREMLY narrow. Or you have a documented Disabilty before the age of 21 or 22, i believe. good luck trying to get any kind of money just for having AS. ive applied twice, and have been denied both times, not only is it frustrating, but its a pain in the butt. dealing with the governemnt.
services you can get, if you have a job, like me but only work a few hours a week if you make under $3,000 a month you can get foodstamps in my state, and free healthcare is pretty easy to get. my states free healthcare is called AHCCCS. (i have both foodstamps and AHCCCS)
Also, Vocational rehabilitation is available, to help with employment but be advised that this place is just like the Social Security Administration. there a**holes, and the process for me was quite terrible.
goodluck.

The only times the "government" has helped me is when I became homeless and my parents helped get me a placement in CD treatment program. When I had a complete breakdown(Psychotic break)which included halucinations, very paranoid dellussions, inability to take care of basic daily functions(feeding myself, bathing)this was because I had been fired from my job and couldnt find a new one, was very depressed and the stress made me "shut down".It hasnt happened in over 23 years,so I think it was just a combination of stress overload causing simi-catatonia.A stranger helped me get into a day treatment program and I got medical, food stamps,"welfare"....this was back in 1988...I dont know if such programs still exist.
A lot of social help programs have been discontinued in the US.There are still a few assistance programs but as long as you have "people" to feed and shelter you,the government does not feel a need to assist you.One of the biggest surprises(blame it on my naivety)to me was that no one really cares about your "struggles".You need someone who is familiar with the mysteries "Social Services" to assist you in getting help. They dont make it easy.I think it was more difficult then most jobs I have had and takes a lot more patience and ability to tolerate frustration/constant absurdity/and apathy of the people who are supposed to help you.
You could look in your local phone book for social service programs and if your parents are willing to help, you can try and get help from one of those programs(they are different for every state,so I cant tell you a specific name). If you are a church goer or not adverse to churches....they may help you get information about social service programs.....they are very informed and tend to be more helpful then a lot of social workers.
My sister did manage to get SSD for suicidal depression along with some physical disabilities but she had to get a lawyer to help her and she had to put up with a lot of paper-work and appointments to prove her disability. It's possible but not easy and you have to not take it personally.
I know exactly what your talking about with "my body feels like a puppet"...that has happened to me through out life and I think it is a form of dissociation brought on by sensory, emotional overloads. For me it felt like "I" was this little spider living inside myhead looking out the "eye holes" of this giant robot that was carrying me from point A to point B."
I wish you luck,if your parents are willing to help you with some of the over whelming elements of getting assistence,it would be for their benefit in the long run. They have been working their whole lives paying taxes for just such a situation as you are now experiencing.

European law used to state that society had a duty towards the elderly and disabled. (Women also had a greater degree of equality, reclaimed only recently) That all changed after the roman empire invaded and replaced humanitarian culture with greed and power centralization.
So dont ever fall into their guilt-trap of viewing yourself as a 'burden', they are supposed to be helping you!
I lived by the work ethic for 30 years. It destroyed me. I should never have been asked to hold down a job - never never never. I've been suicidal for 25 years - obviously staggering on, so I suppose I should just live in hell for so long as I can fake it into a job? Well I did, and the time for that is over, I'm toast. Housebound toast. Am I enjoying it? No, too many panic attacks and generalized fear.
Will you say the gov't did the right thing by me, giving me money after I paid 30 years of taxes? Life has been absolute hell, and I'm getting a break of a few years before I come down with Alzheimers, like the rest of my family. Phooey.
Does society owe us? Should they fund my life outside the system? If they are funding others, they should include me. What should be the criteria? Inability to join the system.
Oh I could go on forever.

well i mean, if your going to make EVERYONE live by the same standards, work in order to buy and make a living, sociaty needs to quit complaining about people who need a little help to fit into the system they've set up.

Society paying monthly welfare for all of someone's life is not "a little help".
It might be nice if there were behavorial and training programs aptly available for Aspies. Outside of that society doesn't owe any of us anything. It's more like you get what you give. Only really low spectrum autistics deserve to get on SSDI and some of those people are actually willing to work medial jobs.
Society owes you nothing just because you have Aspergers. What your parents owe you is even limited. Get off your lazy duff and get a job! Quit whining. A lot of people have it worse than Aspergers and still manage to work. If you honestly have a problem working with others you can train at home to do medical transcription or billing and work for online companies such as Spheris.

and if youve ever paid ANY kind of federal & state taxes, dont feel down about using any services you qualify for. thats part of the reason you pay taxes, to use services you need.

Yeah, you people need to quiet down. You may think Aspergers is not that big of a deal, but it's a spectrum disorder, and you don't have much of a right to tell a person that it isn't "good enough" for SSI, any more than they have a right to tell you that isn't good enough an excuse not to have a social life. You don't know how other people live.
Plenty of people collect welfare because they ended up with kids during their teens as a result of a decision. A disability is not a decision.

So what if there is a difference. Once you grow up from a child to an adult you will see idealism is great but it doesn't always pay the rent. You can crybaby all you want about society but that won't change anything. Like it or not life is repeative. Even in the old days cave men had to hunt and gather about the same way every day or else starve. If you want employment you are passionate about. First get out from behind your video game, go to college and study a field you are into and then get a job you love. In the mean time you may have to get a job you don't like to pay the rent, buy groceries, etc. while you go to school.
Of course people work for a paycheck kiddo. It's called survival. Just like the caveman either get off your ass or starve. We just don't hunt these days we have to sit at a desk and make money for CEO's who in turn pay us to help them make money. You can't have paid much in on taxes unless you work, paying measley sales tax when you buy something with your allowance doesn't entitle you to welfare checks. Grow up and be a MAN and WORK like the rest of us!
BTW- going to work is the best way as an adult to practice your social skills and actually make friends in the real world, maybe even get a date
