San Antonio Area Adults with Asperger's Syndrome

If you live in the same area as me, this might interest you.

I went to the annual monthly-meet up today, and there where almost thirty people there... Heh.

Anyway, I'm super excited to make some new friends while I'm there! :D

Wish me luck!

I tried to join an Autism support group and I could not stand it. It just seemed like nobody was listening to me and everyone was my father's age or older. I did find a supportive audience here at WP though! There's also this guy who I now believed is diagnosed with Aspergers who always tried to befriend me (he must have known) and I hate to say I found the guy way too intense to be around. No wonder I was friendless for most of my life!

I recently joined "Ability club" at my school, it's a student-run group for people with various disabilities. It's a big group, but only a few people come to the meetings. So far I've met a guy with dyslexia, a girl with Irlen syndrome, two autistics, one with co-morbid schizoaffective disorder and bipolar, and one person with Cerebral Palsy. They're a really cool bunch and I'm glad I found them: I've never connected to other people the way I connected to them before. We meet once a week, which is nice because if I only got to see them once a month I'd go crazy.

That is awesome Fluttercord! Keep us posted on how it turns out. StarTrekker I am so happy for you too because I remember when you were posting about how hard being at school was for you. So I hope this makes it a little easier for you. That is really great.

I got some great news too. I just found out at the Autism Expo that I attended this past weekend and then reconfirmed it with the Special Olympics rep that Autism Spectrum makes you absolutely eligible to be an athlete. As long as your life is impaired by it and your doctor signs the application, no matter how high functioning you are or how "normal" you look, you are eligible. And as long as you meet the requirement they accept all levels of athletes so you can find a competitive place no matter what level of athlete you are. And she said they even encourage high functioning people because you can inspire and encourage other athletes in a way that the NT coaches can't because you know what it's like to have certain struggles the NT's can't relate to. So I will be talking to my GP tomorrow to see if he will sign my application. I don't have an official documented diagnosis but she said the I have been evaluated by two professionals so they will still accept me if my doctor is willing to sign the application. She understands that I don't have $1500.00 to get a diagnosis so they are okay with that. So hopefully I will be able to become an athlete. Of course you can all guess my sport! :D
