autism vs mentally ill

Hello any one both autistic and mentally ill?about a week ago my new therapist told me because I am hearing voices in can no longer be in her social skils group or be in developmentally disabled programs (besides escapade and my camp.) get OPWDD or be in the special Olympics I need these programs because it help my autism and may help with my writings on auhhhtism. How many of you are in both programs? What is being both autistic and mentally ill l like? What are mentally ill programs like also what is it vs developmentally disabled programs? I really think I wouldn't belong in a mentally ill group.

Living with autism exerts great stress.

I for the first time can admit I have days where I feel paranoid.

Treatment for the mentally involves group therapy and people on the autistic spectrum do not belong in that.

The brain is an organ like any other.

You know you are hearing voices and you know you know a misfiring part of your brain is doing this?

Keep that information to yourself.

am someone who gets pyschotic everytime have been suffering from untreated extreme autistic related anxiety,mine is seen as a part of having classic autism,they see it as the brains way of communicating mental distress to someone [self] who is unable to express or recognise it traditionaly.

perhaps the therapist believes the mental illness side is a bigger disability impact than the asd and is thinking the other service users will be at risk, they may be considering the other athletes more vulnerable from mental distress behaviors but its not up to them to choose who gets to enter a special olympics club assuming it works the same way as over here.
am still very confused how the SO US can keep advertising on the site that its for people with intelectual disabilities but allow others in to,how do they expect to get athletes in if theyre advertising it wrongly?

I am both. I work at a program for the mentally ill. Some remind me of myself, especial some of the ones who hear voices. A lot of times they have the same social issues as people with AS. You never know. You might like it. I am sorry you can't do the programs you enjoy anymore.

KOR, Special Olympics USA has a whole section of their site talking about how they work with Autistic athletes as well.

I'm worried that people see autism as being mentally ill, because my parents sure treat it that way...

think can remember reading that page but it didnt specificaly mention HFA;theyve always worked with autistics but that means autistic with ID;one of the clubs am member of is full of us.
where do they refer to competing aspies/HFAs? am not saying anyone is lying but am really confused as to how they can advertise one thing and do another as they dont allow non ID people to compete at national or international level.

Around here most do see it as being mentally ill unfortunately. Even the medical professionals. It is only lately I have come out so to speak locally as I don't care what others think anymore. I don't worry about prospective employers either as I am deemed by doctors (and myself/family) as unable to work. I suppose it is merely the rest of the world just overgeneralizing things they do not understand. It is just a label anyhow so to me I see no difference. Very few will even want to take the time to listen about it anyhow. To them we are just DEFECTIVE.
