Look at Life Through Autistic Eyes

By HANNA KOZLOWSKA AUGUST 29, 2014 2:56 PM

For their senior film at the Ringling College of Art and Design, Marisabel Fernandez and Alexander Bernard created an animated simulation of life through the eyes of a non-verbal child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) ?and her constant struggle to cope with the world around her,? as they write in their artist statement.

ASD diagnoses in the United States are on the rise, with one in 68 children currently on the spectrum according to the Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The disorder is at the center of a heated debate between parents worried that it may be caused by vaccinations, and scientists who deny the claim. A recent controversy was sparked when a whistleblower claimed the CDC was covering up information proving a link between the two.

The video, posted by Fast Company, integrates live footage with animation, imagining the child?s sensory experience. The sounds are loud, chaotic, the visuals abruptly change, with swirling shapes and vivid colors. Objects and beings are never visible in their entirety, but are represented by parts ? a cat by its nose and whiskers, a dog by its nose and tongue.

Two videos, much more text, and interesting comments here >>> http://op-talk.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/0 ... =RecEngine

I will be intrested in what KOR has to say on this,

That's said, umm for me this was very confusing, especially when things went all animated

They seemed more like hallucinations. I don't know I just felt very overwhelmed and confused.

I get trying to match the sensory stuff, but I feel like the animation really took away from this

It'd be pretty hard to make an accurate experience of someone that doesn't understand language.

I can't even remember anything from when I was nonverbal/had poor speech.

(I'm also not a fan of using visual and verbal distortions to depict an altered sensory system.)

I did not like sensory "experiences" . What about lower functioning and LFA?

This. I never feel like these sorts of videos give an accurate representation of our experiences, or mine at any rate, but I do find the harsh, disjointed grating sounds and the sharp, fast-moving colours and images to be physiologically bothersome and disturbing; ironically the video trying to teach people about sensory overload, triggers sensory overload.

It's true, though it wonder if it actually works for non autistics.

I wasn't impressed either. I thought some of the comments were interesting though. The video about Carly's Cafe struck a few meaningful notes for me, but Im not at all paranoid like I thought she seemed. My father was ALWATS teaching me how to be a "normal" person... it was exhausting!

The looks on other people's faces. I interpreted those shots as what she saw.
