Uni said I can't attend lectures this year, and if I insist on going to them (as technically nobody can stop me), they will refuse to provide me any support and also no DSA funding.

They said I should study at home (am repeating the year) and take the exams in the summer next year.

I am left with days spent at home, trying hard to keep structure, with zero study support.

At least going to lectures would give me structure and get me out of the house, but I need a support worker full time at uni (challenging behaviour and severe anxiety related to autism), and now that the uni refuse to provide support, I am stuck at home for a year.

I struggle to study with no structure and study support.

Any advice appreciated.

I don't know how it works there, but I know here in the US that you get very little support in college for disabilities. D: It sucks because it's also one reason I can't go through it. My special needs are mild to moderate, yet my learning challenges are somewhat severe compared to most people who attend college with a disability.

If it's something that you can use legal force on, it might be the only way to convince them they need to provide you with support. If not, then I don't think there's much that can be done since it is a university. Once you graduate high school, colleges expect you to not need any specific services, which is rather stupid.

In the UK we get Disabled Students Allowance, last time I got a full DSA it was a £12,500 grant. Full time would be £25,000.

I will ask my dad about legal standpoints. He's a high flying businessman so he's good at legal resources.

That's messed up....

Anyways, modern university is like that. They tend to be unethical and there only to grab profit. They do not try and will not accommodate or cooperate with a student without legal pressure. I believe that if they said not to attend lecture, that is probably a point on which to build a case. This can affect NT's and it would affect anyone neurodiverse even more. Just the threat of legal action is often enough to get them to do something though. Just start with a credible threat.

This is truely disgusting! :x
How can the next generation of scientists, new thinkers, and university graduates be put in such a dreadful, demeanining and degrading position as this!

It beggars belief!

Our whole society is built on the scientific principle!

And now a bunch of a***hole bean counting bureaucrats get to decide the future of the education of the human race!
it's INSANITY!

Last year I went to lectures with no support (because the uni made excuses) and I ended up having almost daily meltdowns and eventually stopped going after a student called me a "dangerous freak".

My non-uni support worker has been emailing my dad so I'll ask my dad what he thinks.

Cambridge university have a very useful publication on accommodations for students with AS, which may give you some ideas on suggestions to make to UCL. Cannot post link (apparently), but google Cambridge Asperger and follow the links to a pdf on CU's Disability Resource Centre page, entitled "Supporting Students with Asperger Syndrome"

Most people struggle with lack of structure. I have loved ones who sought out employment they didn't need purely because of that need for structure (not money). Most of us grew up in a world of parents, teachers, and bosses who provide that structure for us.

Advice:
Make up your own structure and incentives. Experiment around and see what works for you. Have a time management system and tweak it til it fits your personality. That's what I do and now I have a therapist who says I'm "too stiff" in my structure. Life is funny that way. :?

I am unfamiliar with UK law. I do know, however, in the USA, you would have grounds for a massive discrimination lawsuit.

Is that legal? They can't stop you from lectures if you are paying for them.

I sympathize with your situation, but if you can't sit through a lecture without disrupting it in some way, then the university has little choice but to bar you.

I am sorry but that discrimination and segregation. Have you contacted the school about this issue?

Isn't the UK signatory to the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Disabled? In which case they have to make reasonable accomodation.

Phone your local newspaper or TV station and get in the news - and see how quick the university changes their mind.

I'm from the UK and they are breaking the law, end of story. Many of the UK universities are now actually quite forward thinking in terms of ASD so this really shocks and surprises me. Reading Uni for example is our local one and is meant to outstanding.
