Every now and then I either run into another person on the spectrum and can see, from the outside, how lacking in self-awareness they are, or I suddenly realize how much I have been lacking it, either currently or in the past.
For instance, people who think they are behaving appropriately when they are actually humiliating themselves, people who think they're really good at something when they actually suck at it (is it just me or does the Dunning-Kruger effect seem worse in autistics?). A lot of the time, when I make something, I realize later it's very childish when at first it looked good to me. I often realize after the fact I was dressed ridiculously or my house was completely unacceptable when I had company, though I thought it was fine at the time. I get caught talking to myself, yet somehow I do it again a few days later.
Does anyone else have this experience? It really depresses me and makes me want to do nothing at all, since I can't even trust myself and my own perception.
