Forgetting things about people

My memory is usually excellent, but when it comes to people I usually forget things about them. I can ask them something about their life, and forget within the space of a day. Does this happen with you too?

Of course I can forget things, no one remembers everything, but I will usually remember what people tell me.

Yes but my memory is kind of bad in general. But I am probably worse at remembering stuff about people than anything else.

Lol... I was thinking it is the question in the poll and answered "Yes". My real answer is "I am not really good in remembering things about people. "

Actually I am really bad at this. I was like this since very young kid. At age 7, after a few months sitting next to a girl in all my classes everyday apparently I couldn't answer what is the name of the kid I am sitting with or even if it is a girl or a boy when my grandma asked me.
Currently I am a bit better in this but I still have no idea where is my best friend studying although I bet she told me it many times. I also don't remember names of 3/4 of my classmates and I must admit there is only about 11 people in my class currently and I am attending the classes since almost 2 years(only weekends though). At least I remember what are the names of the 2 people sitting next to me...

Btw. Take a look in this thread please and vote. http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt263503.html I got an theory that it might be related to prosopagnosia. It that true in your case? (Prosopagnosia - inability to recognize/remember faces)

I'm not good at remembering things in general sometimes including people

I am great when it comes to remembering facts, dates, quotes, etc. But when it comes to people, not so much. It is very hard to remember their names or sometimes if I actually even know them. An example; I met a woman the other day at an event and she seemed really happy to see me. It seems that we sat together in a year long class not too long ago. Who knew? It sometimes drives my wife crazy when I have to ask her a persons name every time we meet or talk about them.
So, I guess I just have selective memory when it comes to people. If it's important to me, I'll remember, if not...then not.

I'm the same way. I only remember people for as long as I need to. I've had people come up to me who apparently knew me from years ago, but I didn't recognize them. I'm not very good with names and faces. My mind is always crowded with other stuff that's a more immediate concern, and some things just get pushed out.

I´ve got used to make excuses and tell, that my mind is crowded right now. The same with names: "Please, don´t take this personal. I´m not good with names, but I always remember a face" (not entirely true, but it helps).

It's called (at least I call it) "face blindness" which also includes names.

A former classmate in high school (I'd only been there about 4 months) recognized me two years later; it blew my mind someone could do that, but I think many NTs can.

I have something similar. I'm good with remembering facts about people, but if someone said something like ''my husband goes into hospital tomorrow'', I will say ''hope he gets on OK'' and everything, but then the next time I see that person I completely forget that her husband had gone into hospital and so forget to ask how it went. Then it looks like I'm not interested. I think I would have more friends if I didn't forget these things people tell me.

It's crazy isn't it ... I've done many , many online IQ tests and was relieved to discover that I've got a very high IQ ...sadly one of the tests had a separate section testing memory .4 types .
Short term auditory memory, short term visual , long term auditory and long term visual .

My scores ranged from ridulously poor long term auditory 14% to very bad short term visual at 27% !

My wife , daughter and son all scored over 90% for every section !

I can only remember things that are important to me or that interest me ( hobbies / obsessions)

Sadly , things like other people's family info or whatever means nothing to me ..... all goes to making general chitchat very difficult of course .

When someone tells me their husband goes into hospital I will wonder what to answer because I will have no idea whatever he got sick or he just works in a hospital so I answer nothing and end up looking as someone who simply doesn't care.

People will tell me their name and before we've finished talking, I've already forgotten it.

I have a great memory for my Special Interests and other things that interest me but if I'm not into it, I'm just not into it... and I'm just not into people. They barely move the needle on my give a sh!t-o-meter.

Same here. That's exactly the kind of thing I have trouble remembering.

I tend to forget people's birth dates. Thanks to Facebook, I get birthday reminders!
