Every now and then I either run into another person on the spectrum and can see, from the outside, how lacking in self-awareness they are, or I suddenly realize how much I have been lacking it, either currently or in the past.
For instance, people who think they are behaving appropriately when they are actually humiliating themselves, people who think they're really good at something when they actually suck at it (is it just me or does the Dunning-Kruger effect seem worse in autistics?). A lot of the time, when I make something, I realize later it's very childish when at first it looked good to me. I often realize after the fact I was dressed ridiculously or my house was completely unacceptable when I had company, though I thought it was fine at the time. I get caught talking to myself, yet somehow I do it again a few days later.
Does anyone else have this experience? It really depresses me and makes me want to do nothing at all, since I can't even trust myself and my own perception.

I can relate, but it doesn't distress me too much unless I hurt someone inadvertently. I'm not aiming to impress, but I do try to seem competent--especially when I doubt I am.

Everything you described applies to me too and yes it's depressing when you find out how childish or stupid the things you did it happens to me a lot

I get so embarrassed when I think back on things I did that later on I realized were socially unacceptable or dumb.

I would rather remain blissfully unaware.

I once told someone that I was a flexible person. She kind of smirked. She was a very nice person, so she wasn't insulting me, but she was trying to cover up her total disagreement. I did not see (and still don't) what she saw, but I realize now that there must be something in me due to AS that exudes rigidity. I just don't know how I come across, obviously.

Again, I would rather remain blissfully unaware.

I just want to be accepted as my blissfully unaware self.
